Frith, William Powell, 1819-1909
Variant namesBiographical notes:
William Powell Frith was a popular and successful Victorian painter. His early talent was nourished by his working-class father, and he was educated at Sass's Art School and the Royal Academy. His early paintings were generally derived from classical or literary themes; in later life, he painted contemporary Victorian compositions that proved to be highly popular, and remain interesting as images of the age. He also published articles critical of the Neo-Raphaelites.
