Johns-Manville Corporation
Biographical notes:
The H.W. Johns Manufacturing Company (New York, N.Y.) was founded in 1858 for the use of asbestos as a fire resistant roofing material. The Manville Covering Company (Milwaukee, Wis.) was founded in 1886 for the use of asbestos as a heat insulating material. They merged in 1901 to form the H.W. Johns-Manville Company (New York, N.Y.). The company was reincorporated as Johns-Manville Corporation in 1926, but was temporarily named Manville Corporation between 1981 and 1997. Now Johns-Manville, headquartered in Denver, Colo., is a manufacturer of building insulation, commercial roofing, roof insulation, and specialty products for commercial, industrial, and residential applications.
