General Roswell S. Ripley, a native of Ohio, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1843 and served in the Mexican and Seminole Wars. Subsequent to leaving army service, he settled in South Carolina, where he was a businessman and also active in the state militia. He was named Major of South Carolina ordnance in 1860. As a lieutenant colonel, he commanded the reconditioned forts, Moultrie and Sumter. In 1861, he was appointed brigadier general, C.S.A. After serving with Pemberton in South Carolina, Ripley was a brigade commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Wounded at Antietam, he returned to South Carolina as commander of the 1st Artillery District. After the fall of Charleston, in 1864, Ripley joined the Army of the West at Bentonville. After Bentonville, he left the United States for Britain where he stayed for a number of years. Ripley died in New York in 1887.

R. S. Ripley wrote the two volume history The War with Mexico, published in 1849. He worked on the Coast Survey for the first half of 1846, and then served in the Mexican War as a second lieutenant and later first lieutenant, 2nd Artillery, participating in most of the battles from Monterey to Mexico City.
