English actor and producer, closely connected with the revival of poetic and religious drama in England, Browne was responsible for the first production (1935) of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral and produced all of Eliot's subsequent plays. He was director of the Pilgrim Players, the Mercury Theatre (1945- ) and the British Drama League (1945-1957); visiting professor at the Program in Religious Drama at Union Theological Seminary, N.Y. (1957-1962); and Honorary Drama Adviser to the New Coventry Cathedral in England (1962- ).
