The 2nd South Carolina was organized in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department. Before Marion assumed the command, it was under command of William Moultrie (June 1775 - Sept. 1776), and Isaac Motte (Sept. 1776- Sept. 1778). The regiment took part in the defense of Charleston (1775-1776) and the siege of Savannah (1778). In February 1780, it was consolidated with the 6th South Carolina Regiment.
