Botany professor. Dr. Charles Bessey was the first Professor of Botany at Iowa State University, beginning in 1870. He guided the Dept. during its formative years and established the first undergraduate botanical laboratory in the U.S., in which he introduced a compound microscope and other important apparatus. In 1882 he was elected Vice-President of the College and served as acting President in 1882. In 1884 he left Iowa State to become Dean and Head of the Dept. of Botany at the University of Nebraska.
