Archibald Constable apprenticed with an Edinburgh bookseller, opened his own shop, and eventually became a publisher. A canny and successful businessman, he published Edinburgh Review, the works of Walter Scott, and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Eventually, liberal policies toward authors contributed to overextending his resources, and the firm went bankrupt.
