Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve served as Dean of Barnard College from 1911-1947. A graduate of Barnard (B.A., 1899) and Columbia (Ph.D., 1908); she was a member of Barnard's English Dept. from 1900-1911. Her primary interests were literature and public affairs. She was an early supporter of the League of Nations and was the only woman member of the U.S. delegation to the 1945 San Francisco Conference which established the U.N. She was a member of the advisory commission on education sent to Japan in 1946. Gildersleeve was a founder and twice president of the International Federation of University Women, and chair of the American Council on Education. Records related to her public affairs activities are located at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University. She was author of many pamphlets, articles and addresses including her memoirs, "Many a Good Crusade" (1954).
