Biographical notes:

Sir William Orpen, born in Dublin, Ireland, was a portrait painter. He resided in Ireland and England and was friend of W.B. Yeats. Orpen studied at the Metropolitan School of Art (Dublin) and Slade School, and became an official artist in World War I. The University of Victoria Libraries Special Collections has a mandate to acquire literary papers.

William Orpen was a well-known society portrait artist in London and served in the Army Service Corps as an official war artist during World War I. He was knighted in 1918 for his service and was appointed the official portrait artist of the Paris Peace Conference. After the war, Orpen continued to paint and published his memoris and other books on art.
