The Population Council was founded by John D. Rockefeller 3rd in 1952 and is an independent non-profit organization. It is international in the composition of its Board of Trustees and its staff, as well as in the nature and extent of its activities. The Council has helped raise the issue of population growth to global attention, and has helped further understanding of the relationship between fertility, popultion growth and socio-economic development.
