Biographical notes:

John S. Wise and Richard A. Wise were sons of Henry Alexander Wise. John S. Wise was born in Brazil in 1846. He attended Virginia Military Institute and fought with the cadets at the Battle of New Market. He graduated from the law department at the University of Virginia, was U. S. Attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, and served in Congress 1883-1885. He was a Readjuster and later, a Republican. He moved to New York City to practice law. John S. Wise died in 1913.

Richard A. Wise was born in Philadelphia, Pa. 2 September 1843, and attended the College of William and Mary for two years. He served in the Confederate States Army and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. Richard A. Wise was professor at William and Mary from 1869-1880; superintendent of Eastern Lunatic Asylum 1882-1885 and served in the Virginia House of Delegates; as circuit and county clerk in James City County, Va.; and in Congress 1898-1900.
