Title:
John Lane Company Records 1856-1933, bulk 1894-1930
The records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933, are comprised mainly of incoming correspondence. Also present are manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, notes, documents, and autobiographical materials of John Lane. In addition, there are readers' reports prepared for manuscripts submitted to the firm between 1894 and 1930. The reports are a valuable source of information on the firm's publishing guidelines and on the kinds of manuscripts submitted during that period.

John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

Cunninghame Graham, R. B. (Robert Bontine), 1852-1936. Correspondence to Morley Roberts, 1902-1936.
Title:
Correspondence to Morley Roberts, 1902-1936.
Several of Cunninghame Graham's letters to Roberts in 1922 concern W. H. Hudson, their mutual friend, following Hudson's death, including references to and quotations from letters that Cunninghame Graham had from Hudson. In January 1923 there is mention of items sent by Hudson's executor, which Cunninghame Graham was sending to Roberts. Later references to Hudson (May and September 1935) concern Cunninghame Graham's correspondence with Dr. Fernando Pozzo, of Quilmes, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who was a friend and admirer of Hudson (see correspondence file for Pozzo, Folder 110). Also related to Hudson is the last item, a letter dated 23 February, presumably from 1936, dictated by Cunninghame Graham while he was visiting the former house of Hudson in Quilmes, with the escort of Dr. Pozzo; in pencil on the verso is a note in Roberts's hand indicating that Cunninghame Graham died on 20 March. (This item was removed from Roberts's personal copy of his book W. H. Hudson; see Box 8.) A letter of 29 August 1933 concerns Henry Hyde Champion, who was also a friend of Roberts. Several letters in spring to summer 1933 allude to a sketch Roberts was writing that portrayed Cunninghame Graham. Of letters written from places other than Scotland or England: one in 1928 is from Gropesa, Spain; one in March 1932 from Morocco; and 2 in 1934 from Ceylon. Cunninghame Graham occasionally refers to his own writing as well as to Roberts's books.

Author files Gl-K: Author files include correspondence with editorial department staff and with the directors of J.M. Author files also include correspondence regarding illustrations used in Dent publications, correspondence with illustrators, rough drafts of manuscripts, synopses of manuscripts, and photographs of selected authors and illustrators. Note that files are incomplete, since many items of significant commercial value were sold piecemeal in the 1980s and some files from later years are held by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, which took over the Dent firm in 1986.
