West was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass. in 1898. He attended Pennsylvania State College before serving in the United States army, 1918-1919. He received his A.B. degree from Dartmouth College in 1922 and his A.M. degree from Dartmouth College in 1924, after working as an Instructor of English at the college.
