The most important series in this collection are the correspondence and letters, the subject files, and the patronage, political. In all of those series the political career of John H. Bankhead (1872-1946), and to a lesser extent, Lister Hill and Hugo L. Black are discussed. U.S. and Ala. politics receive much attention, especially the New Deal, unemployment, and the search for jobs through the patronage system. Aspects of the New Deal covered especially well include farm tenancy and the Farm Security Administration, the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the court packing scheme of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the National Labor Relations Board. Ala. subjects and political subjects covered especially well include: the beginning of radio station WSGN, U.S. political patronage in Ala., the grooming of Jim Simpson to unseat John H. Bankhead (1872-1946) in 1942, the campaign of William B. Bankhead for the presidency, 1940; and a plan to create the Ala. Medical College in Birmingham. Race relations in the U.S. Army, and the World War, 1939-1945, received extensive treatment also.

Papers, 1880-1947 and n.d., containing correspondence, letters, telegrams, biographical records, genealogical records, financial records, invitations, photographs, a diploma, campaign records, speeches, a script, voting records, bills and resolutions proposed by the U.S. Congress, hearings, reports, clippings, memoranda, subject files, diagrams, press releases, and other materials. This collection documents the life of Bankhead (1872-1946), particularly that part of his career in the U.S. Senate involving agriculture and farm tenancy. Other aspects of his senatorial career are not as well documented. His personal life and political campaigns also are represented, as is his work in 1940 with the Democratic National Committee. There are several good photographs of the former Senator, however, as well as other family members. Of interest are the folders of correspondence between Bankhead (1872-1946) and his sister, Marie B. Owen. U.S. and Ala. political, economic, and social issues are discussed in great detail, as is the Ala. Dept. of Archives and History. Also of interest are the "turtle" letters to his granddaughter Louise B. Davis, written while Bankhead (1872-1946) recovered from illness in 1936-1937.

Title: Records, 1936-1980.

Records, 1936-1960, consisting of a statement of the traditions of the Unity Club, 1979; minutes of meetings, 1936-1960; and letters, schedules , and lists, 1937-1980. The minutes contain the names of those present, guests, the speaker, the topic, and the topic and speaker of the next meeting. In addition, there are some clippings on the activities of some of the members, particularly Gould Beech and Earl McGowin. There are also lists of the speeches given under the name of the presenter. Prominent members of the Club included Grover C. Hall, Marion Rushton, Jesse B. Hearin, C.B. Smith, W.W. Wilkerson, Clifford J. Durr, John L. Goodwyn, Judge Richard Emmet, Judge John C. Godbold, Truman Hobbs, Paul B. Jones, M.R. Nachman, Adolph Weil, Jr. and several others. The letters are primarily about membership and attendance at meetings, and there are lists of members and speech presenters.

These papers contain correspondence, letters, clippings, photographs, awards, certificates, ephemera, and printed materials. The primary topics discussed are her family and friends, civil rights and voting in the South, and politics in the U.S. and in Ala. Correspondence and letters constitute one-half of the collection, and clippings one-fourth. Of particular interest is the correspondence with the Harkness Fellows, who were European students studying in the U.S., as well as the correspondence with Hugo L. Black, and his second wife, Elizabeth, and with Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson. Other prominent correspondents included: Julian Bond, Angus Cameron, William Sloan Coffin, John Doar, James Dombrowski, William O. Douglas, James E. Folsom, Abe Fortas, John Hope Franklin, Helen Fuller, Katherine Graham, Grover Cleveland Hall Sr., Estes Kefauver, Herbert H. Lehman, David E. Alabama. Relief Administration. State publications, 1932-1935.

Title: State publications, 1932-1935.

The function of this series is to document federal relief in Alabama. There is a biennial report, forms book, a publication of the same name describing the policies, organizations, and other aspects of the Alabama Relief Administration (ARA); a publication of the same name detailing various aspects of the Rural Rehabilitation Program, a research bulletin on landlord-tenant relations, and a field report on the Transient Bureau. Of particular interest is the organizational chart of the ARA, with B. M. Miller, Governor, and the ARA Board consisting of Algernon Blair, Donald Comer, John H. Peach, Gessner McCorvey, and Grover C. Hall, with Thad Holt as Director. The biennial report also contains information of note, including a map of FERA projects in Alabama, details about policy formulation and changes, and details about all of the various relief efforts in the forms of narratives, statistics, charts, and maps down to the county level. The field report of Ranald Savery to the Transient Bureau details his four weeks of travels through Alabama as a transient. He began in Mobile, traveled to Pensacola, Florida, then back into Alabama at Flomaton, Montgomery, Birmingham, Florence, Athens, Gadsden, back to Birmingham, Montgomery, and the Mobile area. The report is very specific and many stories about individuals are given in it.

Scrapbook, 1901-1938, consisting of clippings, correspondence, programs, and campaign literature. All relate to Weil's club and political work, especially her work with the League of Women Voters, the National Council on Jewish Women, the Montgomery (Ala.) Canning Club, and the Montgomery (Ala.) Federation of Women's Clubs. Correspondents include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Louis Untermeyer, Hugo L. Black, Grover C. Hall, Janette Adams, J. Thomas Heflin, and Dr. L.L. Hill. Most clippings are not dated, but there are several pictures of Mrs. Weil in the clippings. There is at least one letter to the editor of the Montgomery Advertiser from Mrs. Weil, undated, in which she remarks on the need to incorporate towns surrounding Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., into Montgomery in order to attract large businesses and to enlarge the tax base. Of special interest is the correspondence supporting the Kellogg Peace Pact in 1928 with U.S. Senators Black and Heflin, and the clippings on the death of Sidney J. Weil.
