Italian pianist and composer.
German-Italian composer and pianist.
Prominent 19th-century Italian pianist.
Ferrucio Benvenuto Busoni (1866-1924) was born in Italy, the son of an Italian clarinettist and a pianist of German descent. After being trained by his mother he completed his education at Vienna and Leipzig. In 1889 he became professor of piano at Helsingfor, and from there he moved to Moscow and later the United States. From 1894 to 1914 (and again from 1920 till his death) he lived in Berlin. During World War I he lived in Zurich. He married Gerda Strand in 1890.
Busoni was a pianist of considerable repute and also conducted including works by his contemporaries. His major works comprise an opera unfinished in his lifetime Doktor Faust and two further smaller operas. He composed numerous pieces, mainly for the piano, and also made transcripts of Bach's organ works for piano.

The Department of Music of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded in 1919 and offers graduate and undergraduate curricula in music theory, performance, and musicology. Records of the department include sound recordings and documentation of select University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Music concerts and recitals, 1954-1983, as well as administrative records of the department, 1950-1977. The sound recordings feature not only departmental faculty and students but also guest artists. Numerous ensembles are represented, including the Carolina Choir, Early Music Ensemble, Friends of Chamber Music, North Carolina String Quartet, UNC Jazz Lab Band, UNC Opera Theater, UNC Wind Ensemble, University Chorus, University Chamber Singers, University Men's and Women's Glee Clubs, and University Symphony Orchestra. There is also a number of recordings of composer Roger Hannay conducting the New Music Ensemble. The administrative records are scant and consist mainly of faculty meeting minutes, files related to curriculum planning, and files related to departmental concerts and recitals.

Typescript and correspondence, 1953-1954.
The photocopy from a Stuttgart newspaper of June 19, 1953, is a review of Ferruccio Busoni's, "Doktor Faust, " praising its performance in Dortmund. The postcard of June 26, 1953, is from John J. Becker, American composer of avant-garde music, describing his teaching duties and inquiring how a concert of Varèse's had gone. A brief note from Varèse to Fred Gruenfeld is dated March 6, 1954. The two-page undated typescript by Varèse describes what he is attempting to accomplish in his composition "Deserts." He addresses how the use of visual and sound images will create an emotional reaction.

The letter concerns in part Busoni's granting permission for Alma Mahler to pay Arnold Schoenberg a stipendium from the Gustav Mahler Foundation, of which Busoni was a juror.
