Cornelia Otis Skinner was an American writer, monologist, and actress. Born on either May 30, 1899 or 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, Skinner was the daughter of actors Otis Skinner and Maud Durbin. Skinner attended Bryn Mawr College, but left during her sophomore year to move to Paris, where she attended the Sorbonne and studied acting at the Jacques Copeau School and the Comedie Francaise.
Skinner began her acting career in 1921, debuting as Dona Sarasate in the stage adaptation of Blasco-Ibanez's Blood and Sand, alongside her father, Otis Skinner. Skinner went on to establish herself as a well-known stage actress in her plays Will Shakespeare (1923), Tweedles (1923), The Wild Wescotts (1923), In His Arms (1924), and White Collars (1925). In 1925, Skinner wrote her first play for her father, the off-Broadway production, Captain Fury.
Skinner continued writing and toured the United States from 1926 to 1929 performing one-woman monologues. In 1928, she married Alden S. Blodget and had one son, Otis Skinner Blodget. In the early 1930s, Skinner's roles focused on historical women, writing and portraying a range of different characters in The Wives of Henry VIII (1931), The Empress Eugenie (1932), The Loves of Charles II (1933), and The Mansion on the Hudson (1935). Additionally, Skinner earned recognition for her adaptation of Margaret Ayer Barne's novel Edna, His Wife, which toured London in 1937 and the United States in 1938, as well as for the lead in George Bernard Shaw's Candida in 1939. In 1952, Skinner won the Barter Theatre Award for outstanding acting on the Broadway stage. That same year her one-woman show, Paris '90, debuted on Broadway. Skinner played fourteen different characters, celebrating the women depicted by French painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Skinner's final stage performance was in The Irregular Verb to Love in 1964.
After retiring from acting, Skinner continued to write, contributing numerous essays to publications such as The New Yorker, Ladies' Home Journal, Vogue, Life, Harper's Bazaar, and Reader's Digest. Compilations of Skinner's essays include Tiny Garments (1932), Excuse It, Please! (1936), Dithers and Jitters (1938), and Soap Behind the Ears (1941). In the 1950s, three more volumes were created: Nuts in May (1950), Bottoms Up! (1955), and The Ape in Me (1959). In 1948, Skinner published the memoir, Family Circle. Other writing projects included Elegant Wits and Grand Horizontals (1962), adapting material from her one-woman play Paris '90 about the Belle Époque; Madame Sarah (1967), a biography of Sarah Bernhardt; and Skinner's final book, Life with Lindsay and Crouse (1976), a biography of Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. Skinner died on July 9, 1979 in New York City.

Title:
Joseph Henry Jackson papers, circa 1931-1955.
The collection consists mainly of correspondence (both letters written to Jackson and his replies); manuscripts of a few books and articles; notes and research materials; royalty statements; clippings of his book review columns; and some photographs. They cover the period 1931-1955 but date mainly from 1949. Jackson apparently shared the failing of many newspaper men, in not saving papers. What remains of the earlier period are chiefly the clippings and letters from famous authors. Correspondents include: Melvin Belli, Alistair Cook, Edith M. Coulter, George Creel, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, James D. Hart, James Laughlin, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Upton Sinclair, Wallace Stegner, Carl Van Doran, Carl I. Wheat, Erskin Caldwell, Earl Stanley Gardner, Owen Lattimore, Carey McWilliams, H.L. Mencken, Wright Morris, Irving Stone, Dalton Trumbo, Robert Penn Warren, and Edward Weston.

Title:
Speer Family Papers Bulk, 1883-1943 1802-1982
The Speer Family Papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family’s papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Correspondents include: Ilka Chase, Helen Hayes, Lillebil Ibsen, Alfred Lunt, Armina Marshall, Mary Martin, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emlyn Williams and Peggy Wood. There is a large gap in the materials for the 1940s and 1950s. Some production photographs were separated to the Theatre Collection photo files. Alexander, William, 1726-1783. Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
Title:
Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.
