Seixas Family papers : Mixed archival material 1829, 1834, c.1839, 1846, 1867.
Title:
Seixas Family papers : Mixed archival material 1829, 1834, c.1839, 1846, 1867.
This folder contains six items: Item 1: Property evaluation, July 2, 1829. Thick, folded over original document from Charleston. On the back of this document are the first two words of the text: "We the subscribers." It seems as though the person who was drafting the document erred in the way he was writing and turned over the paper, and wrote on the other side. The signers of this document had been called upon to examine the conditions of a lot in Champruey's(?) Alley with the ruins of an old building upon it. The property seems to belong to the young children of Isaac M. Seixas, who is deceased. They find the building very destroyed, without a roof, with the lower floor ripped up and falling through. They also certify that the building had been authorized to be demolished because of its state and the likelihood that it would fall on its own. Item 2: Letter from Joshua Seixas to Elizabeth, February 22, 1834. The letter is in response to Elizabeth's letter to Joshua. Elizabeth is Joshua's student. He apologizes for the delay in his response to her. He cites his reasons as 1) being away from home, 2) his eyes were weak at the time he received the letter, and 3) he had been waiting to receive a certain grammar book. He remarks that he was happy to hear that Elizabeth had told him about her love for heavenly things and a newfound religiousness and spirituality. He discusses the fact that it is impossible to love Christ and one's parents. He calls Jesus Christ l-rd, and expresses his wish that his family imitate his ways. He continues by praising Jesus' faith in G-d and the commandment to follow Jesus and his ways. [Note: there is both the use of Hebrew terms and talk about Jesus in this document. Elizabeth's ancestors were religious people, and she has strayed from Judaism.] The next section of the letter expresses Jacob's concern over hearing about Elizabeth's mother's misfortune, although he does not say what the misfortune is. He then goes on to discuss the problems he is having with his eyesight and his compulsion to give up the Concordance he was working on as well as his Hebrew Grammar book for several weeks. He concludes the letter by wishing pleasure to Elizabeth and her entire family and signs it 'your sincere friend, J. Seixas.' Item 3: Account record, circa 1839. Original document. A half sheet of paper, column on the right hand side with a list of numbers, set aside from the words of the document by a double vertical line. The document is a record of money and shares in companies owned by the deceased Moses Seixas. Item 4: Account record, continuation of above, circa 1839. Two separate original pages, containing writing on both sides of the documents. As with the previous document, there are lists of prices on the right column of the page, separated from the main text of the document by a double line on the sheet of paper. Both pages are beginning to tear along the folded crease in the middle of the page. The two pages are detailed accounts listing furniture and other items found in various rooms of a house and their value. These items and their prices reflect the amount of money raised at an auction. Item 5: October 29, 1846. Contract, October 29, 1846. Original document, contract signed by Jacob B. Seixas, Jonas B. Phillips and Richard Lawrence. In the top center of the document is a symbol that contains a man and a woman standing on two sides of a shield. The man is holding a sword and scales of justice; the woman is holding a long rod. In the shield is the image of a sun setting behind a mountain, overlooking a body of water. There are bushes behind the man and woman as well as an eagle with its wings spread on top of the shield. There are three red dots on the lower right hand corner of the paper in a vertical position. This contract is a loan document, wherein the three men promise to return four hundred dollars that they borrowed. Item 6: Estate of H. M. Seixas, April-June, 1867. Four attached pieces of paper about the estate and death of H.M. Seixas. Alfred M. Seixas is the Executor, H.M. Seixas may have been his mother Hannah. His father Abraham Mendes Seixas was known to have died in 1867, yet the deceased initials appear to be H.M. The pages are held together by a straight pin. Page 1: Dated May 17, 1867. On May 22, at noon there will be an inventory of all of H.M. Seixas' belongings, for all who are interested in the deceased estate. Page 2: From the County of New York Surrogate's office, dated June 3, 1867. A statement that everything reported to have been found during the inventory is accurate. Page 3: A statement by witnesses and the appraiser that the articles and objects he found in the deceased's possession were declared honestly. The document is light blue and printed. Page 4: Titled Inventory and Appraisement of the Personal Estate of H.M. Seixas. Handwritten on a lined sheet of paper and signed by the appraiser. It lists possessions and their value. There is also a stamp worth five cents stuck to the paper. On top of the stamp is printing that says 'April 18, 67.'.

Judah P. Benjamin, called the "brains of the Confederacy", was a statesman and jurist in the United States, the Confederate States, and Great Britain who achieved high-ranking titles wherever he served, and left an especially indelible mark in the South where he held more official positions than any other man during the Civil War. After the fall of the Confederacy, Benjamin fled to England, where he was admitted to the English bar, and later assumed a judgeship. In 1872, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. Containing correspondence, letters, newspaper clippings, Confederate bank notes and bonds, Civil War memorabilia, pamphlets, and a bound copy of Benjamin's diary from 1862-1864, the collection is valuable to researchers studying the activities and experiences of Jews in the antebellum South and under the brief reign of the Confederate States of America. Additionally, through the material relating to memorials and preservation endeavours for Benjamin, the collection also provides a look at the continued glorification of Confederate heroes in the South long into the 20th century. The collection also contains pre-Civil War correspondence between Benjamin and Peter A. Hargous regarding the creation of a railroad line on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico and the Tehuantepec Railroad Company of New Orleans.

Mayer Sulzberger Collection
Title:
Mayer Sulzberger Collection
The Sulzberger collection spans the years 1857 to 1923. The bulk of the collection is concentrated after 1900, although there is a fair amount of legal and personal material dating from the nineteenth century. The collection provides access to several of the vast networks of relationships and projects, both Jewish and non-Jewish, in which Sulzberger was involved during his life-time, including important documents relating to the bequest of Moses Aaron Dropsie and the founding of Dropsie College. One particular item of interest is an undated petition addressed to Governor Pennypacker (including an appended autographic treasure) to appoint Judge Sulzberger to the (Pennsylvania?) Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the collection contains numerous gaps in the documentation of Sulzberger's life; study of this collection will provide only the beginnings of a comprehensive portrait. See the bibliography, below, for additional primary sources and comments for future research). Of particular note is the range of well-known personalities and organizations represented in the correspondence series. Sulzberger maintained an ongoing interest in and involvement with the burgeoning movement of historical Judaism in America (which later crystallized as Conservative Judaism) and corresponded with many of the movement's leading figures such as Cyrus Adler, Louis Ginzberg, Alexander Marx, Solomon Solis-Cohen, and Israel Friedlander, whose letters regularly appear throughout the series. Also noteworthy is Sulzberger's ample correspondence with the Jewish Theological Seminary's second president, Solomon Schechter, published in part by Meir Ben Horin (see bibliography.) Of potential interest is the American Jewish Committee series, which contains correspondence, clippings, and other documents relating to the condition of Jewish communities around the world, and the AJC's work to lobby the U.S. government on their behalf. Primary sources may be found, for example, which deal with the hotly debated Russian Passport Question concerning the prohibition of those American Jewish citizens who came originally from Russia from freely traveling there; the persecution of Jews in Kishineff, and other reported outbreaks of anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe; the consequent calls to abrogate the 1832 Treaty of Commerce and Navigation between the U.S. and Russia. Of interest to scholars of the early Zionist period are several reports sent to Sulzberger by Israel Zangwill, the leader of the Jewish Territorial Organization, a group which had proposed the re-settlement of Jews in East Africa and had consequently dispatched several surveys of the region to determine their suitability. In addition, Sulzberger was consulted on the formation of a Jewish Institute of Technology, (what would become the Technion), a school of advanced engineering planned for Haifa. He also received dispatches from the Provisional Executive Committee of General Zionist Affairs, including a copy of the famous dispatch of Lord Arthur Balfour pledging England's support for "the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine (November 2, 1917)." Of great usefulness for reconstructing a bibliography of Sulzberger's literary efforts is the extensive group of drafts and notes, both handwritten and in typescript, of published and unpublished addresses, occasional lectures, essays and monographs composed by Sulzberger. Several copies, in typescript form, of Sulzberger's published scholarship are to be found, including that of his The Am ha-aretz (1910), The Ancient Hebrew Law of Homicide (1912), The Polity of Ancient Israel (1915), and The Status of Labor in Ancient Israel (published posthumously in 1923). In addition, a published copy of each of these works has been incorporated in the collection. Sulzberger was an avid, perhaps America's unequaled private collector of rare Hebrew books, manuscripts, and artifacts. Contained in the collection are detailed ledgers listing accessions to his library and related acquisitions. Of particular note in this regard is the extensive correspondence Sulzberger maintained with Alexander Marx (which was recently edited, annotated and published -- see bibliography, Dicker, 1991, below), found in the correspondence series, which documents Sulzberger's foresight and faithful support of the creation of the Jewish Theological Seminary's library. Researchers of nineteenth century American legal and commercial history may profit from an examination of the legal series which contains records relating to Sulzberger's legal work, the business ventures and interests he often represented, or those in which his family was involved. For example there is a fair amount of material relating to an inventor named Kitsee, and his company, the Mine Safety Company. Sulzberger represented Kitsee and apparently at one time purchased a controlling share of the company. Of related interest to the social and economic historian are the family series and financial series which contain numerous records documenting various Sulzberger businesses and expenditures, particularly during the nineteenth century.

Records of the Board of Delegates of American Israelites [electronic resource], 1859-1932 1859-1881. [1859-1932]
The records of the Board of Delegates of American Israelites document the life cycle of the first successful national and international relief and civil rights organization in the United States geared toward the Jewish people. Founded by reformist New York Jews, the Board worked with the newly created Alliance Israélite Universelle in Paris, and the older established organization, the London Committee of Deputies of British Jews, to further the political and religious rights of Jews in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The collection documents the Board of Delegates' communications with these organizations, the Board's work in protecting U.S. constitutional rights against a one-religion state and the Board's determination to defend the equal rights of Jews in the United States. In addition, the collection contains surveys and correspondence documenting the founding, location, and membership constituency of synagogues from the dues-paying congregations of the Board of Delegates of American Israelites. In 1878 the Board amalgamated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and was subsumed by that organization in 1925.

Baron de Hirsch Fund records [electronic resource], 1882-1991 1882-1935. [1882-1991]
The Baron de Hirsch Fund records document the organization's involvement in the planning of agricultural communities across the United States and to some extent in South America; the founding and administrative dealings of agricultural and trade schools; the establishment of the Jewish Agricultural and Industrial Aid Society; and the business records of the Fund itself. The collection documents the protection offered to immigrants through port work, relief, temporary aid, promotion of suburban industrial enterprises and removal from urban centres through the Industrial Removal Office, land settlement, agricultural training, and trade and general education. In this respect, the collection is of major interest for Jewish genealogists as it documents a number of individual immigrants. In addition, the collection contains documentation on the administration and organization of the Fund, Jewish farming colonies such as the Woodbine Colony and Woodbine Agricultural School, and the Baron de Hirsch Trade School. The collection includes blueprints and photographs of facilities.
