Elizabeth Montagu, née Robinson, English author and literary hostess.
Elizabeth Robinson Montagu, an author and literary hostess, was a central figure in London's Bluestocking circle, and a friend of Samuel Johnson. Her best-known work was 1769's anonymously published An Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespear.
For nearly fifty years Mrs. Montagu maintained a practically undisputed supremacy as hostess in the intellectual society of London.
Elizabeth Montagu (Robinson), English author and socialite. Her husband Edward Montagu (d. 1775) was a member of the Parliament, prominent Whig and owner of coal mines in Northumberland and estates in Berkshire and Yorkshire. Elizabeth Montagu's home in London was a famous literary salon that attracted Hannah More, Elizabeth Carter, Lord Lyttleton, Horace Walpole, Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and others. After the death of her husband, she managed the family estates and collieries. Elizabeth Montagu was known as a prolific correspondent.
Elizabeth Robinson Montagu, an author and literary hostess, was a central figure in London's Bluestocking circle, and a friend of Samuel Johnson. Her best-known work was the anonymously published An Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespear (1769).
Elizabeth Montagu was born on October 2, 1720, in York, England. She was the first daughter and fifth child of Matthew and Elizabeth Robinson, two well-connected and wealthy members of society who were generally distant and preoccupied parents. She spent much of her childhood in Cambridge at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Conyers Middleton, Elizabeth’s grandmother and her second husband. On these stays, Montagu and her closest sister, Sarah, were introduced to academic pursuits and pleasures. They were educated in Italian, French, and Latin and read classical and English literature and history.
Montagu’s interest in lively intellectual life continued through many important friendships in her adolescence and early adulthood. She was a close companion of Lady Margery Harley, whom she met in Cambridge. Harley was three years older than Elizabeth and introduced her to a glamorous society life. After Harley married the second duke of Portland, Elizabeth regularly visited them in London, experiencing the sort of free intellectual discourse between men and women at their home that she would later emulate in her "bluestocking" gatherings.
Elizabeth married Edward Montagu on August 5, 1742, despite her disdain for marriage. Her only child John died unexpectedly in September 1744, devastating Elizabeth. Her relationship with her husband was cordial but distant; he was preoccupied with his business and political interests and she enjoyed her intellectual pursuits.
Montagu is most famous for her "bluestockings parties," gatherings of literary figures and intellectual socialites at her London home at which drinking and card games were banned in favor of witty discussion of literature, philosophy, and other topics. Often called the "queen of the bluestockings," Montagu and her friend Elizabeth Vesey organized these meetings. Montagu also pursued her own writing, including an appreciated and acclaimed essay on Shakespeare, displaying her nationalism and belief in his genius and condemning the less positive evaluations of contemporary critics such as Samuel Johnson and Voltaire.
Montagu died in 1800, leaving her estate to her nephew, Matthew Robinson Montagu.
Biography
Elizabeth (Robinson) Montagu (1718-1800), English authoress and leader of society, was the wife of Edward Montagu, a member of parliament for Huntingdon in the whig interest and a person of wealth who owned coal mines in Northumberland and estates in Berkshire and Yorkshire. Mrs. Montagu's house in Hill Street, London, was a gathering place for persons of fashion and intellect and the "bluestocking" assemblies there attracted such visitors as Lord Lyttelton, Horace Walpole, Dr. Johnson, Burke, Garrick, and Reynolds. After 1775, the year of her husband's death, Mrs. Montagu personally managed the affairs relating to her estates and collieries.
The peculiar significance of this collection, formed by Matthew Montagu, 4th Baron Rokeby, Mrs. Montagu's nephew and executor, is that it includes many of Mrs. Montagu's letters (3300) as well as several thousand letters addressed to her.

Just returned from Margate, where they had a hot summer. Wonders if Mrs. Garrick is at the Adelphi. Grieved for her when she saw Mrs. Montagu's death in the papers. Hears that Albany Wallis has left a great fortune, some of which she thinks should have been left to Mrs. Garrick.

Must cancel dinner tonight due to illness. Lord Shelbourne, Mr. Dunning and the Wilmots will meet Mrs. Garrick. Longs to ask Mr. Garrick how he endures the pertness of the critic who says Shakespeare has but very little merit as a tragedian. Miss Gregory is impatient for the opening scene, and will meet Mrs. Garrick at her box. With integral address leaf.

Nicholas, Robert. Journal of Parliamentary notes, 1786-1789.
Title:
Journal of Parliamentary notes, 1786-1789.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of Nicholas' diary, in which he records primarily his activities in Parliament. He records debates in Parliament, including those on the King's illness, the Regency Bill, and the India question, and also notes the presences and absences during votes. The diary also includes accounts of his meetings and discussions with political allies outside of Parliament; petitions to William Pitt; and his unsuccessful campaigns for the positions of Receivership General of the Land Tax, and of Commissioner of Excise and Customs or Stamp and Tax Offices, noting his disappointment in his applications to Henry Addington. He also attends and describes the trial of Warren Hastings. In the diary, Nicholas also records his social activities and includes frank descriptions of his acquaintances, including a conversation with Elizabeth Montagu concerning her charity work with poor women; a dinner conversation with "Capt. Ellis" who discusses the beauty of the "Negroes in the Islands"; and tea with "Mr Cholmley." Elsewhere, he discusses the finances of his estate, noting that some of the land has been in his family between 300 and 400 years.

Autograph letters signed from Joel Henrietta (Mendez) Pye, [England] and Paris, to Mr. and Mrs. Garrick [manuscript], 1774-1779.
Mrs. Pye seems to have been one of Mrs. Garrick's consultants on Paris fashions. In her letter to Garrick, no. 34, November 21, 1774, she also comments on the French theatre and opera, Préville and Mlle. Rocourt, her visit to Voltaire who spoke with approval of Garrick's alteration of Hamlet; she had seen Foote and heard a rumour that Bickerstaffe had brought out a comic opera at Marseilles. In no. 33, September 17, [1776], she writes of having called on Mrs. Montagu. In no. 35, February 8, 1779, she writes on the death of Garrick.

Title:
Letter, 1790 June 18, Cambridge, to [Elizabeth Charlton Montagu]
Autograph letter from Matthew Robinson Montagu, the future 4th Baron Rokeby, to his wife, Elizabeth Charlton Montagu, dated June 18, 1790 from Cambridge. Montagu had come to Cambridge in order to be there in time for the British general election of 1790. He notes that the majority was "for Mr Pitt" and regrets having made his journey, as he had "particular reasons to wish to remain with Wilberforce." He hopes that he will be able to be home the following Sunday, and hopes that their "dearest and best friend" (probably his aunt, Elizabeth Montagu) has made it back from Bath in good health. Originally purchased with a letter from Elizabeth Montagu to William Pulteney, now housed and cataloged separately as ba MS. 2010.018.

The first part of her notebook contains a number of cooking recipes and medical cures, some dated, some in other hands, and some signed with initials or names, for example: "For the Ring Worm - Duchess of Gordon, " "Lady Montagu's Excellent remedy for a cough, " "Lady Calthorpe's receipt for a cough of long-standing." Other entries include preparations for coloring rooms, preventing moths in fur and wool, and fixing chalk drawings. At the end of the notebook are 16 pages signed C.M. describing a tour of the Lake District during August-September, 1807 or 1808. These are probably written by a member of Caroline Douglas's own family, the Montagus, a note on the paste-down recording the size of beech trees at Glen Stuart in 1807 is signed C. Montagu.

Recipients: Sarah Scott, the Earl of Bath, and an unidentified recipient. (1), written to Scott from Mount Ephraim, [Tunbridge Wells], appears to be incomplete and includes discussion of Lady Huntingdon's Methodism. In (2), to the Earl of Bath, she trusts "the Doctor's honour that he will not talk to Mr. Garrick ... upon what he saw in my letter to your Lordship concerning Shakespear." Signed E. Montagu. (3), to an unidentified recipient, is fragmentary, but makes reference to "Lady Bab's great book" and quotes, albeit imprecisely, The tempest: "the cloud-cap't towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the great globe itself, & all which it inherit, shall like this insubstantial vision faded, leave not a wreck behind." Signed E. Montagu. With (3), a print of Mrs. Montague [sic], published by Alex.r. Hogg, April 30, 1787.

Title:
Frances Reynolds papers, 1774-1800 and undated.
The bulk of the correspondence consists of fifteen letters from author Hannah More to Frances Reynolds, which discuss the Johnsonian circle and the larger 18th-century literary world in great detail. These letters are particularly interesting for their content regarding Edmund Burke, David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, and Elizabeth Robinson Montagu. Also noteworthy are five letters from Reynolds to Samuel Johnson, mostly social in content. Other letters are addressed to Reynolds by Elizabeth Robinson Montagu and George Steevens. The manuscript series consists mainly of three drafts of Reynolds's Recollections of Dr. Johnson (never published during her lifetime), and her untitled poem with suggested revisions in Johnson's hand.

The second letter, written in another hand and addressed to "The Revd.
