The collection consists of eleven black and white photographs including images of William E. Ritter, Mary Bennett Ritter, Ellen Browning Scripps, and an unidentified man who resembles E.W. Scripps. These photographs belonged to William E. Ritter and his wife Mary Bennett Ritter and were received from Mary Bennett Ritter's family. The photographs are all black and white images. The photographs include two undated photographs of William E. Ritter, a photograph of a pencil sketch of Ritter, an undated 11x17 print of a portrait of Ritter marked "Clark, Berkeley," and portraits of Ritter dated July 1927 and 1940. The photographs include three portraits of Mary Bennett Ritter. Two of these images are identical except that one is dated 1916 on the verso, and the other is signed "Mary Bennett Ritter, M.D., War Lecturer 1917-1918" on the verso. The third photograph of Mary Bennett Ritter is dated 1925. The photographs include one portrait of Ellen Browning Scripps dated 1919 and a 10x14 portrait of an unidentified man marked "Copyright Wilcox 1900" which may be E.W. Scripps.

The file documents the founding of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, its growth and development as the Scripps Institution for Biological Research of the University of California and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
