Scripps, Robert Paine Scripps and other members of the Scripps family with officers of the Scripps Institution, including William E. Ritter, Thomas Wayland Vaughan, Harald Ulrik Sverdrup. The file also includes memoranda, accounts, legal and financial documents and other material. The file documents the founding of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, its growth and development as the Scripps Institution for Biological Research of the University of California and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The file also documents the contributions in funds and service made to the founding and continued operation of the Scripps Institution by members of the Scripps family. The file includes many documents essential to an understanding of the early history of the Scripps Institution, including original penciled drafts of the by-laws of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego and minutes of the Association.
