Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. He founded Dartmouth Medical School in 1796. In 1813 he joined the new Yale Medical institution, and he lectured on medicine at Bowdoin College, starting in 1821, and Vermont Medical School. Smith married Sarah Chase and raised 10 children. He died in 1829.

When the Yale School of Medicine opened in 1813, Smith became one of the initial lecturers. From 1821 to 1825 he was a visiting lecturer at the newly formed Bowdoin College medical school. Dr. Smith also aided in the founding of the University of Vermont's medical school in 1821.

Born in Chatham, N.Y, John Delamater was licensed to practice medicine at the age of nineteen. He spent eight years in private practice at Sheffield, Mass., and In 1823 he assumed a professorship at the Berkshire Medical Institute. In 1827 he moved to Fairfield, N.Y to join the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of the State of New-York. He later was on the facuty of the Willoughby (Ohio) Medical College, and took part in the founding of the Cleveland Medical College, a department of Western Reserve College.

Handwritten and signed letter dated 24 June 1814 and addressed to "Miss Betsey Blanchard" of Hopkinton, New Hampshire. Chase writes to Betsey, apparently a girlfriend, and tells her about his serious illness. He had been treated by Dr. Nathan Smith (1762-1829). This is the same Dr. Smith who treated Joseph Smith (1805-1844), first president of the Mormon Church, the year before.

This collection consists of correspondence between Dr. Carpenter, instructors, and classmates, Yale ephemera, a published engraved portrait, and various official documents including his agreement for apprenticeship training with Dr. Washburn. Dr. Carpenter's correspondence contains observations about illnesses and treatments common to 19th century rural New England including: the procurement of leeches, hemorrhage, and fevers. Letters also discuss the difficulty of treating common illnesses, and the difficulty Dr. Carpenter had in realizing that as a doctor, he would not be able to cure all his patients. Yale ephemera include course cards from the first series of lectures given in 1813, the year of the inception of the Medical Institution of Yale College. Carpenter's 1813 course catalogue and catalogue of the officers and students of Yale College have been transferred to the Archives section of the Historical Library with other Yale medical catalogs.

Correspondence chiefly concerns the Dartmouth College case (Trustees of Dartmouth College v. William Woodward. Correspondents, whose letters primarily relate to the Dartmouth College case, include a number of Dartmouth College trustees including Nathaniel Niles, Israel W. Putnam, Seth Payson, Timothy Farrar, Elijah Paine, and Asa McFarland. Among those opposing the college trustees and supporting Dartmouth University, Brown received letters from Gov. William Plumer, Gov. John Taylor Gilman, William Henry Woodward, John Wheelock, and William Allen. Other correspondents include Joseph Hopkinson, Joseph Perry, Nathan Smith, Benjamin J. Gilbert, Joseph Annance, Alexander Ramsay, Jermiah Mason, Azel Backus, Jeremiah Day, R.D. Mussey, and Erastus Fairbanks. To a lesser extent the records concern fiscal matters of Moor's Charity School and the enrollment of boys from the Stockbridge Indians and the tribe at St. Francis. Other subjects include the loaning of a telescope to Dartmouth by William Thurston, and the leasing of college-owned land in Wheelock, VT. The records include Brown's inaugural address and some accounts.
