Materials collected by Dr. Ronald Fishbein to document the careers of Nathan Smith, M.D., and doctors descended from him, especially Nathan Ryno Smith, son of Nathan Smith, who was associated with the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Documents include Emily A. Smith, "Dr. Nathan Smith. The Story of the remarkable life an work of Nathan Smith, B.M., M.D. with his letters, and a brief sketch of the life and professional work of his son Dr. Nathan Ryno Smith and of his grandson Dr. Alan Penniman Smith. Pioneers from the dark ages to the dawn of the splendid era of modern medicine and surgery, 1787 to 1895," a typed and handwritten manuscript, ca. 1915, which includes photographs and an original letter on Alan Penniman Smith; a copy of genealogical materials on the Smith family given by Mrs. (Barton or Charles?) Cockey, a descendant; copies of photographs; clippings; and secondary sources.

Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. He founded Dartmouth Medical School in 1796. In 1813 he joined the new Yale Medical institution, and he lectured on medicine at Bowdoin College, starting in 1821, and Vermont Medica...
