Medical education and personal papers, 1824-1895, of three physicians of Peirce family of Maine. Series 1 includes volumes of notes, 1824-1825, taken by James H. Peirce on Nathan Smith's lectures on surgery and theory and practice of physic at Medical School of Maine. Papers of B. F. Peirce in Series 2, 1854-1860, include diary fragments, [1854] Dec. 27-1859 Apr. 29, documenting Peirce's life, social and religious activities, farming experiences in Maine, and life in Boston while attending Harvard Medical School. Series 3 documents medical education of James Peirce and includes 21 letters, 1869-1886, to family members concerning student experiences in Medical Dept. of New York University and early years of medical practice in Methuen, Mass. One folder of miscellaneous letters and other material, 1843-1894, in Series 4 includes 1857 letter from Albion K. P. [Meserve] concerning student experiences at Medical School of Maine.

Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. James Hamilton Peirce, Waterboro, Me., physician, was born on 3 Oct. 1803. He received an M.D. from the Medical School of Maine in 1825. He had several children, including physicians B. F. Peirce and James Peirce. James H. Peirce died on 2 Aug. 1878. Benjamin Franklin Peirce was born on 23 Feb. 1837. He attended courses at the Medical School of Maine and received an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1860. Peirce became an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Navy and drowned ...
