Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. The Linonian Literary Society was founded in 1753. All undergraduates were allowed to be members of the Linonian Society. The club provided students with a forum to debate, stage plays, and deliver poems, essays, and orations. The society disbanded in 1868.
