Lytton Strachey was born to an upper-middle class family in London, and educated at Cambridge, where he was part of the rebellious Apostles, a precursor to the Bloomsbury Group. Strachey became an essayist and literary critic; he also wrote poetry, but is best remembered as a biographer. Although he wrote some conventional biographies, his best work was Eminent Victorians, a collection of biographical essays that relied on Strachey's trademark psychological insight rather than exhaustive research, an influential approach that made reading biography more entertaining and helped energize the genre. Strachey's personal life, always influenced by his homosexuality, was unconventional and often unsatisfying.

Lytton Strachey was a British essayist, poet, and literary critic.
English author.
English biographer.
Giles Lytton Strachey was born in 1880, the eleventh of thirteen children, to General Sir Richard Strachey and his wife Jane Grant. Though he spent some years at boarding schools, including Abbotsholme and Leamington College, he received much of his education at home. His mother enjoyed strong interests in literature and politics and Strachey met many of the leading writers and thinkers of the day when they came to visit Lady Strachey. Strachey's secondary education was completed at University College in Liverpool where he studied Latin, Greek, mathematics, and English literature and history. It was at University College that he met and was influenced by Walter Raleigh, a professor of English literature and well known biographer.
After failing to receive a scholarship to Oxford in 1899, Strachey decided to attend Cambridge where he developed many friendships which lasted the rest of his life. At Cambridge he met Clive Bell, Thoby Stephen, and Leonard Woolf, with whom he started the Midnight Society and the X Society. Along with many other future Bloomsberries he was elected to the Apostles. In 1903 fellow Apostle G.E. Moore's Principia Ethica was published, producing a profound effect on the aspiring intellectuals. Principia became a rationalizing factor in loosening the repression of homosexual tendencies among the Apostles and in Trinity and King's College as well.
Strachey completed his work at Cambridge with a thesis on Warren Hastings but failed to receive a Trinity fellowship. He returned to his parents' home in Lancaster Gate and sought to support himself as a journalist. Much of his social life centered on the Bloomsbury group which focused on the Thursday night at-homes of the Stephenses (Thoby, Adrian, Vanessa [Bell], and Virginia [Woolf]). Over the next several years Strachey traveled, visited friends and wrote his first book, Landmarks in French Literature (1912) which was commissioned by H.A.L. Fisher. In 1910 Strachey made the acquaintance of Ottoline Morrell with whom he carried on a playful and extended correspondence over the years. Through Morrell he met Henry Lamb and Henry Norton, who loaned him £100 to rent a cottage so he could begin his next major work, Eminent Victorians (1918). In 1915 Strachey met Dora Carrington, a graduate of the Slade School of Art and the woman who would shortly devote herself to him for the rest of his life.
In 1917 Strachey and Carrington moved into a cottage in Tidemarsh, Oxfordshire, and continued to carry on with their personal lives. Carrington maintained a relationship with fellow artist Mark Gertler before marrying Ralph Partridge in 1921, and Strachey moved through a series of relationships as well. Strachey's time at Tidemarsh cottage was also spent productively writing. He followed Eminent Victorians with Queen Victoria (1921) and produced a collection of essays, Books and Characters as well. His style was becoming very popular and he began to achieve a measure of fame which allowed him to support himself and his household from the proceeds of his writing. In 1924 Strachey purchased the lease to Ham Spray House and he, along with Carrington and Partridge, moved in. He completed Elizabeth and Essex in 1928 and started The Greville Memoirs which were completed posthumously by Ralph and Frances Partridge and Roger Fulford.
Though his frequent ill-health often made it difficult, Strachey enjoyed traveling and made several trips abroad between 1928 and 1931. Late in 1931 he began to decline rapidly from an illness which doctors were unable to identify. He died January 21, 1932, of what was later found to be stomach cancer. Carrington committed suicide a few weeks later, unable to live without him.

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.

Title:
Autograph letter signed : the Lacket, Lockeridge, Marlborough, to Clive Bell, 1913 Nov. 25.
Strachey asks Bell if he may stay with him in London for a few days and mentions his health ("I have been feeling rather drab lately") and his work (he has just finished his "horrid" Stendhal article and is about to write about Restoration Comedy for the New Statesman). He concludes: "You seem to lead a very dissolute life in comparison with my rural purity. Well, well, at any rate it sounds enjoyable. I have to fall back on the beauties of nature, which have the drawback of not reciprocating. It's tiresome, for it would be delightful to be embraced by a prospect, sucked off by a cloud, and buggered by Savernake forest -- but one never is."

Carrington, Dora de Houghton, 1893-1932. Dora Carrington Collection, 1912-1965.
Title:
Dora Carrington Collection, 1912-1965.
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Dora Carrington Collection, supplemented by a small book of woodcut prints by Carrington and a few poems and essays by other authors. The small Works Series holds a notebook, apparently hand-made, containing about twenty prints of woodcuts made by Carrington. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing, incoming, and third-party correspondence. Outgoing correspondence is made up of letters Carrington wrote to her friends and family. Many of her letters include drawings and woodcut prints. Particularly well represented are her letters to Noel Carrington and Mark Gertler. Incoming correspondence contains letters Carrington received from friends. Mark Gertler is again well represented with an accumulation of about 150 letters. Also present are letters from Henry Lamb, C. R. W. Nevinson, Ralph Partridge, and Albert Rutherston, as well as others. Letters from Augustus John include several poems. Third-Party correspondence is composed of letters written by Noel Carrington, Mark Gertler, and Ralph Partridge, as well as others, to other people, some after Carrington's death. The recipient of many of these letters was Thomas Balston, an art historian. The Works by Others Series is composed of research notes and materials on Mark Gertler gathered by Thomas Balston. Also present is an untitled poem by Gilbert Cannan, and an autobiographical essay by Mark Gertler.

Strachey, Lytton, 1880-1932. Lytton Strachey papers, 1921-1953.
Title:
Lytton Strachey papers, 1921-1953.
Papers (11 items, dated 1921-1953) including the original manuscript of Elizabeth and Essex (New York and London, 1928) and a statement by Professor Charles Richard Sanders of Duke University concerning the gift of the manuscript to the university; a letter from Strachey to Spalding, his publisher, 1921; letters, 1928, from Strachey to Crosby Gaige (1882-1949), book collector, regarding a limited edition of Elizabeth and Essex; a letter and a postcard, 1945, from Arthur Pforzheimer, antiquarian bookseller of New York, to Sanders concerning that edition. Addition (2011-0113) (6 items, 0.1 lin. ft.; dated 1929) contains three autograph letters from Strachey to a Major [John C.] Daniell about Elizabeth and Essex. Also includes related typescript newspaper editorial and clippings. In the letters, Strachey concedes that he should have described John Daniell in Elizabeth and Essex as the Earl's "follower" rather than "servant," in view of the pedigree the Major contributed to the TIMES Literary Supplement. Strachey promised to make this alteration in subsequent editions, but resolutely defended his description of Daniell as a 'ruffian' and his account of Daniell's ruin in the book. He then asked for forgiveness for his remarks "if, as I suppose, you are one of Daniell's descendants. My only excuse is that it all happened a long time ago!..."

Mary Hutchinson Papers
Title:
Mary Hutchinson Papers
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Mary Hutchinson Papers, 1910-1977, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Hutchinson and other authors. The Works Series is composed of a few articles written by Hutchinson, including biographical sketches of several members of the Bloomsbury group, notes taken on the life and works of Samuel Beckett, and a list of the letters she received from Beckett. The Correspondence Series contains three subseries: A. Outgoing Correspondence, 1915-1973, B. Incoming Correspondence, 1910-1977; and C. Third-party Correspondence, 1912-1941. The collection of outgoing letters is fairly small, representing only a fraction of the letters Hutchinson must have written. Best represented in this section are her letters to her cousin Lytton Strachey of which 141 are included. Also present are a number of drafts of letters intended for Samuel Beckett. Incoming Correspondence makes up the bulk of these papers with well over 2,500 personal letters, postcards, notes, and telegrams sent to Hutchinson over a period of 60 years. By far the largest contributor to this section is Clive Bell with nearly 1400 letters. Other large accumulations of letters are present from Samuel Beckett, Vanessa Bell, Dora Carrington, T. S. and Vivienne Eliot, Aldous and Maria Huxley, Lytton Strachey, Henry Tonks, Virginia Woolf, David Wright, and others. Third-party Correspondence rounds out the Correspondence Series with a number of social and business letters to St. John Hutchinson from Thomas Earp, T. S. Eliot, Maria Huxley, and Henry Tonks, as well as others. The Works and Ephemera of Other Authors Series primarily contains the output of Hutchinson's writer friends, including Samuel Beckett, Clive Bell, Gilbert Cannan, Joseph Hone, and Aldous Huxley. Also present is a portrait photograph of Clive Bell taken by Roger Fry, book plates belonging to Huxley, and a fragment of Augustus John's autobiography.

Title:
Autograph letter signed : Tidmarsh, to Duncan Grant, 1918 May 19.
Strachey expresses his unease with the news that Grant may decide to accept a government position as an "official painter" because Grant would be jeopardizing his status as a concientious objector. Lord Beaverbrook, who had recently been appointed Britain's first Minister of Information, was sympathetic to Grant, which is why he offered him the position, but Strachey worries that if Beaverbrook were to leave office, Grant might lose his C.O. status on the grounds that he had shown himself willing to aid the war effort as a creator of propaganda art. In any case, Strachey finds Beaverbrook untrustworthy, and the practical considerations aside, he implies that Grant would be compromising his consistent refusal to aid the war effort.
