French government representative in Saint Domingue (now Haiti).
Marquis François de Barbé-Marbois (1745-1837), a French government official who served as minister of finance under Napoleon, negotiated the sale of Louisiana to the U.S.
François Barbé-Marbois was a councillor of state, director of the Trésor public (Treasury), and a senator under the French Consulate. In 1803 he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase treaty by which Louisiana was ceded to the United States.
French politician.
Author was the French consul at Philadelphia.
The marquis de Barbé-Marbois (1745-1837), Minister of the French Treasury, 1803.
French government official.
Marquis François de Barbé-Marbois (1745-1837), a French government official who served as minister of finance under Napoleon, negotiated the sale of Louisiana to the U.S.
François Barbé-Marbois is perhaps best known for negotiating the Louisiana Purchase as Minister of Finance under Napoleon. However, this was but one segment of a long and varied career during which the marquis showed a remarkable talent for adapting to changing political winds. Barbé-Marbois had a long diplomatic career in America, serving as secretary of the French legation to the newly-formed United States under Luzerne, and later as Consul-General and representative.
In 1784, Barbé-Marbois was allegedly assaulted in Philadelphia by the chevalier Charles Julian de Longchamps, and a public controversy arose as to whether the defendant was to be tried in Pennsylvania or in France, as that nation's courts demanded. Longchamps was married to an American and had supposedly taken the oath of citizenship, but had been in this country less than a year and was a French military officer. These documents show that Longchamps was eventually tried and sentenced in the Pennsylvania courts. It is unknown whether he remained in this country.

This collection consists of legal documents relating to two civil lawsuits involving François Barbé-Marbois in America. Barbé-Marbois is perhaps best known for negotiating the Louisiana Purchase as Minister of Finance under Napoleon, and also had a long diplomatic career in America, serving as secretary of the French legation to the newly-formed United States under Luzerne, and later as Consul-General and representative.

In a letter, 1813 December 28, Jefferson advises Charles Clay that the prices for Mr. Forbes' cotton and wool carding machines are higher than originally estimated. In a letter, 1814 October 20, James Monroe informs Georgia governor Peter Early that the Georgia contractor must supply rations to both militia and regulars, asks him to make requisitions, and reports that Thomas Pinckney will need an officer from the Quartermaster Dept. for his militia. In a letter, 1817 October 12, James Madison writes to Richard Cutts regarding a gardener for Montpelier, missing numbers of "Niles' Weekly Register" and his autographed copy of Marbois' history of Benedict Arnold's treason which Richard Rush has. Du Pont de Nemours, Pierre Samuel, 1739-1817. Papers, 1757-1836.
Title:
Papers, 1757-1836.
The correspondence of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours covers his entire public career - particularly his involvement with the Physiocratic movement in pre-revolutionary France. The letters from Anne-Robert Turgot represent one of the most significant parts of the collection as they relate to Du Pont de Nemours' career as a governmental official prior to the French Revolution. The collection also describes his settlement in the United States and his later diplomatic career after the fall of Napoleon. Included in the letters is the earliest known one sent by Benjamin Franklin, the first American with whom Du Pont de Nemours had any associations. There is also correspondence with Mirabeau, Napoleon, Talleyrand, Vergennes, Voltaire, and Jacques Necker. The letters from Jacques Necker describe economic conditions during the last years of the ancien régime and the process by which Louis XVI formulated the royal budget. There is also an exchange of letters between Thomas Jefferson and Du Pont de Nemours.

Franklin-Bache Papers, 1707-1799
Title:
Franklin-Bache Papers 1707-1799
Containing over 4 linear feet of letters and documents, the Franklin-Bache Papers comprises the second largest collection of letters and documents relating to Benjamin Franklin in the APS Library. Although the scope of the collection is broad, including materials from the time of Franklin's arrival in Philadelphia to his death, the heart of the collection documents the period of Franklin's ministry in France (1776-1785) and his diplomatic efforts to win financial and military support for the revolutionary cause, as well as less intensive coverage of his ministry in England before the Revolution. Franklin's correspondence with American and French officials, financiers (personal and otherwise), and savants provides tantalizing details on the social context of Franklin's ministry in France, his intellectual life, and his growing celebrity. Much of the correspondence documents the efforts to convince French officials early in the war to support the American cause, but there is valuable material relating to the peace negotiations as well. The collection is equally rich in personal correspondence, including a rich set of letters from Mary Stevenson Hewson, Georgiana Shipley, Catherine Ray Greene, Jane Mecom, Deborah Franklin, and a number of Franklin's other relatives. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Rosengarten, J. G. (Joseph George), 1835-1921. General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Title:
General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Two printed articles by J. G. Rosengarten, General Comte de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau (both published in 1895), bound together in an extra-illustrated volume, with a title page reading: General Count de Rochambeau and The Chateau de Rochambeau (Philadelphia: G. L. Fitzgerald & Co., 1895). The volume contains an original letter from Charles J. Stillé (dated 28 December 1892); 51 print portraits; 4 other illustrations (2 depictions of the surrender at Yorktown in 1781; a view on the Hudson; and the State House in Philadelphia in 1778); and 3 regional maps (Philadelphia; Baltimore; and New York). Most of the items, including the leaves of the articles, are inlaid. The first article is from the American Historical Register (vol. 3, no. 14, October 1895, p. [195]-208, with a different portrait substituted on the first page); and the second is a reprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (vol. 33, no. 146, January 16, 1895, p. 353-361). Stillé's letter concerns Rosengarten's translation from Max von Eelking (The German allied troops in the North American war of independence). Of the portraits, 5 are of Rochambeau; 5 of George Washington; 3 of Charles Cornwallis; 2 of François comte de Grasse; 2 of Charles Gravier Vergennes; 2 of Charles de Houx de Vioménil; and one each of 33 other individuals. The portrait of Marie Joseph Paul Lafayette is in color. The portrait of Étienne Maurice Gérard was evidently included in error, in connection with a mistaken reference in The Château de Rochambeau to the French minister in Philadelphia in 1782 as Mr. Gérard (p. 357); the minister at that time was Anne-César, chevalier de La Luzerne, who succeeded Conrad Alexandre Gérard in the post in 1779. The volume has a typed index of illustrations at the front. The spine covering is wanting, and covers detached.
