Emma Goldman (1869-1940) was an anarchist, feminist, author, editor, and lecturer on politics, literature and the arts. She was born in Lithuania and died in Canada. Her lectures and publications attracted attention throughout the U.S. and Europe. She was associated with the anarchist journal Mother Earth from 1906 to 1917 and was imprisoned for publicly advocating birth control in 1916 and pacifism in 1917. In 1919 she was deported to Russia but had to leave because of her criticism of the Bolshevik government and was allowed to reenter the U.S. for a lecture tour in 1934.
Frank Harris was a novelist, editor, playwright, and biographer. He was born in Ireland, raised in America, educated in Europe, and lived most of his life in England. He achieved early success as an editor and went on to produce a large body of diverse writing. A strong and often controversial personality, he is probably best remembered as editor of the Saturday Review.

Frank Harris was born James Thomas Harris in Galway, Ireland, February 14, 1856 and emigrated alone to the United States in 1869. After years of study and adventure in America and on the European continent, he returned to London in 1882 and became the editor of the London Evening News in 1883. He edited the Fortnightly Review from 1886-1894, and the Saturday Review from 1894-1898. In his posts at these publications, he became friends (and enemies) with many of the notable figures of fin-de-siècle London, including Oscar Wilde. A difficult personality, Harris struggled with financial stability often after this period, and moved a great deal, living in the south of France and in London in the years before World War I. In 1915, he returned to New York, where he wrote a number of anti-British articles as well as his volumes of Contemporary Portraits. He was the editor of Pearson's Magazine from 1915-1922 and got in many clashes with American censors and others who found him and his work offensive. During this period, he also began dictating his sprawling and sexually explicit memoirs, My Life and Loves, which was published in various forms (expurgated and not) after 1922. In 1923, he settled permanently in Nice, where he died in 1931.

From 1894 to 1898, he edited the Saturday Review. In his posts at these publications, he became friends (and enemies) with many of the notable figures of fin-de-siècle London, including Oscar Wilde.

During this period, he also began dictating his sprawling and sexually explicit memoirs, My Life and Loves, which was published in various forms (expurgated and not) after 1922.
In 1923, he settled permanently in Nice with his longtime mistress and companion, Nellie O'Hara, who he married in 1927. He died in Nice in 1931.
Frank Harris (1856-1931) was an Irish-American author. Born James Thomas Harris in Galway, Ireland, he ran away at the age of 15 and came to America where he worked at various odd jobs. Eventually he came to Lawrence, Kansas, where two of his brothers had settled, and where he attended the University of Kansas, worked at his brothers' butcher shop, and changed his name to "Frank Harris." In 1875 he embarked on a lengthy tour of Europe, visiting England, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Austria, Russia, and Ireland, and upon his return to England began writing articles and book reviews. In 1883 he became editor of The Evening News and then in 1886 of the Fortnightly Review . In 1894 he left that position, bought The Saturday Review, and transformed it into a respected literary journal. In addition to his editorial and publishing work he continued to write, producing his first book of short stories in 1895 and another in 1900. Other works of this period include The Bomb (1908), The Women of Shakespeare (1911), and Oscar Wilde (1916).
From 1914-1921 he lived in America; while there, he published two volumes of Contemporary Portraits, edited Pearson's magazine, and became friends with American anarchists Emma Goldman and Thomas Bell. The first volume of his autobiography was published in Berlin in 1922, and in 1923 he settled in Paris, where he wrote two more volumes of Contemporary Portraits, On the Trail: Being My Reminiscences as a Cowboy, and Pantopia (1930), as well as numerous short stories.
Arthur Leonard Ross ( -1975) was an American lawyer, Harris's attorney, and literary executor of the Frank Harris Estate.

Harris, Frank, 1855-1931. A second preface to "The life and confessions of Oscar Wilde" / by Frank Harris.
Title:
A second preface to "The life and confessions of Oscar Wilde" / by Frank Harris. [1925]
Author's typescript of the book printed in 1925. About half of the work is a lengthy letter from Lord Alfred Douglas to Frank Harris, dated 30 Apr. 1925, giving in detail the latter's financial and personal relations with Oscar Wilde. With a copy of the first edition (an inscribed presentation copy from Lord Alfred Douglas to George Sylvester Viereck), an A.L.S. from Douglas to Viereck (dated 31 March 1926), and a T.L.S. from Harris to Viereck (dated 1 Dec. 1925). The typescript has the notation "Sent to me by Frank Harris. George Sylvester Viereck," but this is in error, as an extant letter from Douglas to Viereck (23 Sept. 1925) informs the latter that a typescript was being sent to him by one Alfred Rose, from London, and this is confirmed by the enclosed letter of Harris. The copy of the first edition is inscribed "George Sylvester Viereck from Alfred Douglas. London. May, 1926." Both letters are apparently unpublished. Letters cataloged separately.

Specific subjects addressed within their correspondence include twentieth-century American literature, communism in the Soviet Union, labor unions and the labor movement in the United States, socialism in the United States, the Spanish Civil War, and twentieth-century politics and government in the United States. Individuals discussed within the collection include Alexander Berkman, Frank Harris, Rudolph Rocker, Leon Trotsky, and Oscar Wilde.

Title:
Papers of Thomas Hastie Bell, 1922-1942.
The collection contains manuscripts and correspondence written by Bell and his friends and colleagues. All but one of the collection's manuscripts were authored by Bell and pertain to his literary work. The manuscripts focus on Oscar Wilde, Frank Harris and Ekaterina Konstantinovna Breshko-Breshkovskai︠a︡. The correspondence, written by Bell and others, is predominantly concerned with both political issues (especially anarchism) and Bell's literary work. Of interest in the correspondence is a letter Bell wrote to Upton Sinclair critiquing the latter's written views of parapsychology. Correspondents include Leonard Dalton Abbott, Roger Baldwin, Ekaterina Konstantinovna Breshko-Breshkovskai︠a︡, Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas, Pryns Hopkins, Joan London, Upton Sincliar and George Sylvester Viereck.

Harris, Frank, 1855-1931. Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955.
Title:
Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955.
The Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955, comprises a large amount of correspondence, as well as manuscripts, passports, and legal documents. Series I contains typescripts for the fifth volume of Harris' autobiography and The New Commandment as well as hand written and typescript versions of several short stories. Notes and fragments are also present for biographies of George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. The large Correspondence series is largely composed of personal letters to and from Harris, though many of Harris' business deals were tied up with personal matters and thus the letters are hard to classify. Correspondents of particular interest include Reginald Caton, Henry Davray, Helen O'Harris, George Bernard Shaw, Reginald Turner, and Louis Wilkinson. Some of the correspondence is written in French. Series III, Personal Papers, is made up of account books, financial papers, legal documents, and passports. The Helen (Nellie) O'Hara Harris series is made up of a few works by O'Hara and a great deal of correspondence, mostly to her. Her correspondents include many of the same people who wrote to her husband, as well as Harold Auer, Curtis Brown, Edward Root, Abe Tobin, and Lady Warwick. The final series is made up of works and correspondence written by people associated with Harris.

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.

Her lectures and publications attracted attention throughout the U.S. and Europe. She was associated with the anarchist journal Mother Earth from 1906 to 1917 and was imprisoned for publicly advocating birth control in 1916 and pacifism in 1917. The papers contain a manuscript interview by Sinclair regarding "The Money Changers." Correspondence with friends, journalists, publishers and other authors concerns his life, work, religious beliefs, travels, publication abroad, dramatizations, and the Socialist movement. Fales Manuscript Collection, ca. 1700-2000
Title:
Fales Manuscript Collection ca. 1700-2000
The Fales Manuscript collection is made up of some 50,000 items, much of which was assembled by DeCoursey Fales from 1908-1966 and donated to NYU. The provenance of the materials is complicated, however. Following Fales' death in 1966, other collections and purchases were added into the Fales Manuscripts collection. We do not have a comprehensive listing of what Fales owned and what the library later purchased after his death. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, realia, ephemera, and other materials primarily about English and American authors from 1700 to the present. There are special strenths in the Victorian, Edwardian, English 1890s, and Transition Period writers.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Title:
Hesketh Pearson Papers, 1789-2001 (bulk 1921-1964).
The Hesketh Pearson Papers document the career and personal life of the biographer and author of short stories, dramatic works, and travel books through correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, photographs, clippings, diaries, and notebooks. The papers were formerly in the possession of biographer Michael Holroyd, who served as Pearson's literary executor and, after the death of Pearson's widow Joyce in 1975, his heir; consequently the collection also includes papers and correspondence generated by Holroyd in these capacities. The collection contains significant amounts of correspondence and research material concerning several of the subjects of Pearson's biographies: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, W.S. Gilbert, Frank Harris, Sir Walter Scott, Beerbohm Tree, and Oscar Wilde. Among the correspondents are A.P. Buckland-Plummer, Adrian Conan Doyle, Norman Charles Hunter, Hugh Kingsmill, Arthur Leonard Ross, Robert Sherard, and P.G. Wodehouse. More than 700 letters between Pearson and Kingsmill make up the bulk of the correspondence.

Papers : of Frank Harris, 1893-1930.
The collection contains manuscripts of essays "Lovers of the truth: Anatole France," and "The dancing of Maud Allen." The Oscar Wilde Collection, 1851-1957, is divided fairly evenly between works and correspondence. Series I is composed of five major works by Oscar Wilde. The Importance of Being Earnest, Lady Windermere's Fan, and A Woman of No Importance are present as complete typescripts while an incomplete draft of A Florentine Tragedy is handwritten. Outgoing correspondence are letters from Wilde to friends and associates including George Alexander, Frank Harris, and Ada Leverson, among others. Incoming correspondence includes letters to Wilde from a wide variety of friends and admirers. Series III is divided into works by other authors and third-party correspondence. Works by other authors include Mr. and Mrs. Daventry (based on a plot by Wilde) by Frank Harris and Robert Sherard's Oscar Wilde: The Story of an Unhappy Friendship. Third-party correspondence includes letters between people who were associated with Wilde, his family, and his biographers, including Vyvyan Holland, Arthur Ransome, and Constance Wilde.

Harry Weinberger papers, 1915-1944
Title:
Harry Weinberger papers
The papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, notes, and other materials documenting Weinberger's career as a lawyer who specialized in civil liberties cases and, later in his career, copyright law. The one hundred and sixteen (116) case files include legal briefs, writs, and memoranda prepared by Weinberger and his staff, and similar material prepared by opposing attorneys. Correspondence files include letters with clients and individuals interested in a specific case. Weinberger's clients included: Alexander Berkman, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, Emma Goldman, and Eugene O'Neill. The papers also include a small number of Weinberg's short stories and plays and correspondence with his nephew, Warren Weinberger. The Harry Weinberger Papers cover Weinberger's professional career from around 1915 until the early 1940s. In that time, Weinberger handled many types of cases, but he took a special interest in people whom he believed had been deprived of their civil liberties. As a result, Weinberger defended many aliens, immigrants, anarchists, and radicals. Two of Weinberger's most celebrated clients were the anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Another client of Weinberger was the wealthy draft dodger, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll. Most of Weinberger's clients were, however, neither famous nor wealthy. Many were referred to Weinberger by service agencies like the American Civil Liberties Union, the League for Amnesty of Political Prisoners, and the Worker's Defense Fund. In the later part of his career, Weinberger became an expert in copyright law, representing many writers, including Eugene O'Neill, in copyright and plagiarism suits. Weinberger corresponded with many prominent figures in connection with his legal work. His correspondents include Roger N. Baldwin, William A. Black, Alice Stone Blackwell, Harry M. Daugherty, Albert DeSilver, Elizabeth G. Flynn, Agnes Inglis, Daniel Kiefer, Robert M. LaFollette, Alvaro Obregon, Elmer Rice, Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffans, Norman Thomas, Frank P. Walsh, Thomas E. Watson and Stephen S. Wise. The papers provide information on United States policies toward aliens, anarchists, and radicals in America during and after the first World War. The papers also contain material on United States immigration and deportation policies and important materials on Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Ricardo Flores Magon, and Tom Mooney. There is, however, very little personal material on Weinberger in the papers. Biographical information can be found in Weinberger's "A Rebel's Interrupted Autobiography" published in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology in 1 October 1942
