This collection consists of a 3 page description of the contents of William Clark's notes as well as three newspaper clippings about the 1953 discovery of the notes. There is some biographical information on General John Henry Hammond (1833-1890), amongst whose papers the notes were discovered. Laid into the binder with the above are reproductions of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Gettysburg Address, as well as a letter to Fred McMillan concerning the Lewis & Clark Sesquicentennial of 1955.

A collection of letters, letter books and diaries covering Hammond's activities from before the Civil War until his death. The diaries describe his activities during the Vicksburg Campaign. The Civil War letters are mostly from Generals recommending Hammond for a cavalry command. Later letters deal with business with the railroads, real estate and investments. Two letter books deal with the period when he was Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Dakota Territory.

Business papers, mainly 1880-1893, of a Civil War general, railroad organizer, and founder of West Superior, Wisconsin, primarily documenting Hammond's land speculating, real estate, and commercial development activities in West Superior. Also documented is the management of Hammond's properties after his death by his son Ogden and H. Knox Taylor, and Odgen's own investments in West Superior. The collection also contains a short autobiography, a group portrait depicting Hammond as a general on W.T. Sherman's staff, and other items.
