Sedgwick (1785-1831) to various family members. Also includes a typescript of a letter sent by Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813), 1776; poetry about various Sedgwick family members by an unknown author; two sketchbooks kept by Louisa Davis Minot, ca. 1828; and Sedgwick family genealogical information, including a manuscript by William Minot (1817-1894).

Personal correspondence of the interrelated Sedgwick and Minot families, 1812-1908. Includes business papers of Charles Sedgwick related to his career as a lawyer and clerk of the courts in Berkshire County. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to and from Elizabeth B.D. Sedgwick, Katharine Sedgwick Minot, William Minot II, Elizabeth D.S. Rackemann, Grace A.S. Bristed and William D. Sedgwick. In particular, a series of letters by William D. Sedgwick to his mother, Elizabeth B.D. Sedgwick in 1861-62, while serving with the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers, before being fatally wounded on the battlefield of Antietam. A large section of the correspondence is with Katharine Sedgwick Minot, the niece of author Catharine Maria Sedgwick, who is referred to in many of the letters, and also introduced Charles Dickens to the family when he toured America in 1842. Katharine corresponded with various family members and friends including courtship letters with her future husband William Minot II, daughter Alice W. Minot, sister-in-law Louisa Tellkampf Sedgwick, and grandfather Josiah Dwight. In addition the collection includes diaries, travel journals and commonplace books, 1828-79, kept by Katharine Sedgwick Minot and Elizabeth B.D. Sedgwick.

The papers of noted ornithologist and railroad executive, Henry Davis Minot, 1825-1891, consist of correspondence, letterbooks, school notebooks, diaries, business papers, maps, printed materials, watercolors, sketches, and photographs. Personal papers contain correspondence with family members including his parents William Minot and Katharine Sedgwick Minot, as well as siblings Laurence Minot and William Minot III, and Harvard University classmate Theodore Roosevelt. A photographic album with individual portraits of the Ponkapoag Dinner Club members - a gentleman's club which met during the summer in Ponkapoag, Massachusetts at the home of Henry Austin Whitney. During the rest of the year, they met once a month at the homes of other club members. Portraits include Dr. Samuel Cabot; N. [illegible]; P[atrick] T[racy] Jackson; T . H. Jackson; Henry Lee, Jr.; Geo. N. Minot; Wm. Minot, Jr, ; Chas. Henry Parker; Dr. Samuel Parkman; Gardiner Howland Shaw; R. Sullivan, Jr.; and Charles A. Welch. Most, if not all, of the individuals graduated from Harvard College in the mid-1830s. The sitters appear to be in their later 30s or early 40s.
