Julio Cortázar was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1914 of Argentine parents, but he grew up in Buenos Aries, Argentina. He was a writer, poet, and translator who authored over 25 novels and short story collections. Some of his best known works include: Rayuela, 62 modelo para armar, and Historias de cronopios y de famas. In 1951 he moved to Paris due to his opposition to the Perón regime in Argentina. He lived in Paris until his death in 1984. Julio Silva was an artist, book designer, and a close friend of Julio Cortázar. He collaborated with him on two "collage" books: La vuelta al día en ochenta mundos and Último round.
Cortázar was an Argentine novelist and poet, best known perhaps for his experimental novel HOPSCOTCH (English translation, 1966). Born in Brussels, Belgium, to Argentine parents, he returned to Argentina in 1919, eventually getting a degree in French literature from the University of Buenos Aires in 1937. He moved to Paris in 1951 and lived there the rest of his life.
Argentine author and translator. Born Aug. 26, 1914, in Brussels, Belgium, to Argentine parents. Died Feb. 12, 1984, in Paris, France. His family returned to Argentina in 1919 from Belgium. After obtaining a degree in 1932 as a high school teacher, Cortazar taught from 1937-1944. He was awarded a degree in French literature from the University of Buenos Aires in 1937, began writing short stories and published his first book of poems Presencia in 1938. He moved to Mendoza in 1944 to teach literature at the Universidad de Cuyo. Due to his views, he resigned in 1945 and moved to Buenos Aires, where he worked for the "Camara del Libro" from 1946-1948 and as a public translator from 1948 to 1951. When he moved to Paris in 1951, he worked as a translator for Unesco (1952-1984) and continued to write until his death. His philosophy of the novel and his life as a voluntary exile are expressed in Rayuela, which he began writing in 1952 in Paris, and published in Buenos Aires in 1963. The literary manuscript in the Benson Collection reflects its complexity. Cortazar obtained the Prix Medicis in 1974 for Libro de Manuel, the Ms. of which is also at the collection. Cortazar travelled extensively throughout his life and remained an advocate of human rights and political freedom in Latin America.
Argentine writer.

Paul Blackburn Papers, 1919 - 1971
Title:
Paul Blackburn Papers, 1919 - 1971
Papers of an American poet, translator, editor, and literary agent, containing materials that detail the course of his career and personal life from the early 1940s through the early 1970s. Blackburn was the author of nineteen books of poetry published between 1955 and 1980, the last six appearing posthumously. He translated the work of such writers as Pablo Picasso, Federico Garcia Lorca and Julio Cortazar, and served as Cortezar's agent. He was also a contributing editor of the BLACK MOUNTAIN REVIEW and the poetry editor of THE NATION for a short time. Over half of the collection is composed of photographs and correspondence. The photographs are primarily of Blackburn's family and friends. The correspondence relates to both personal and professional matters, and consists not only of letters received by Blackburn, but also of many copies of his own letters. Among the prominent correspondents are Julio Cortazar, Charles Reznikoff, Ezra Pound, Octavio Paz, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, and Blackburn's mother, Frances Frost. The collection also includes manuscripts and typescripts of poems, prose and translations dated from the 1940s through the early 1970s and materials relating to the business aspects of Blackburn's career, including contracts, reading schedules and some business correspondence.

Vivisimo muerto : Debates on surrealism in Latin America [videorecording] / [symposium sponsored by the Getty Research Institute].
This two-day symposium explores the history of surrealist ideas and practices in Latin America. Scholarly presentations and moderated discussions address topics including the relationship between surrealism and pre-Columbian art; the role of key figures such as Peruvian poet César Moro and Austrian painter and editor Wolfgang Paalen; and surrealism's continuing legacy in the work of postwar artists in Latin America. The symposium is part of the Surrealism in Latin America research project, which is inspired by the Getty Research Institute's broad and diverse Mexican and South American surrealist collections. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, journals such as Surréalisme (1924), Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution (1930-33), and Minotaure (1933-39) carried surrealist ideas about art, literature, and politics to Latin America. In addition, the transnational relocation of Europeans and Latin American (both before and during World War I) led to the growth of surrealist communities and networks in the cosmopolitan centers of Mexico and South America. As a result, Latin America became an important site for the development of surrealist ideas and the formation of challenges to André Breton's philosophy.

The Review of Contemporary Fiction/Dalkey Archive Press : records, 1980-1990
Title:
The Review of Contemporary Fiction/Dalkey Archive Press : records, 1980-1990
John O'Brien founded The Review of Contemporary Fiction (RCF) in 1980 and established the Dalkey Archive Press three years later. Since its inaugural Spring 1981 issue, RCF has appeared with exact regularity three times a year. Each number is devoted to one or two contemporary figures, predominantly American and British but also some European writers as well. The contents of a typical number include original work by the writer featured, an interview with him or her, a memoir or other biographical reminiscence by literary colleagues, and several extended critical articles. The Dalkey Archive Press began as a modest adjunct to RCF, issuing reprints of books by writers featured in the journal, or associated with those writers. Then in 1986, O'Brien began issuing original works.
