Malone writes to thank Vaughan for a letter wishing him a happy birthday, an event that "was much more widely advertised than [he] expected or desired..." He says that he knows he can't hide how old he is since Vaughan was in his first class in what he likes to call "the black hole of Calcutta," (northwest wing of the Rotunda) now occupied by the "Admissions people." Accompanying this letter is another from Vaughan to Edmund Berkeley, Jr., Curator of Manuscripts for Alderman Library. In the 1981 Dec 1 letter he explains some of the references made in Malone's letter and fondly describes him as a professor.

Ruckman Home, Long Glade, Va.," William Bedford Campbell, David Van Meter Ruckman, II, children of Uncle Glen Ruckman, Pauline Ruckman, James Buxton Perry, Sam Ruckman, Glen Huston Byrd, Anne Irvine, Mrs. Rod Dudley. Of interest are interiors of an unidentified Victorian home, outdoor scenes of cattle, and a studio portrait of four fashionably dressed girls eating bananas.

Photocopies of letters, 1830s-1870s, to and from Moses Ashley Curtis, Episcopal priest, teacher, and noted mycologist, who lived in Wilmington, Raleigh, and Hillsborough, N.C., and Society Hill, S.C. These documents were collected by Edmund and Dorothy Smith Berkeley in preparation for their biography of Curtis, published in 1986 as and were gathered from repositories in the United States and Europe. Many of the letters are grouped together according to where the originals are housed.
