Dumas Malone letter to Joseph L. Vaughan [manuscript], 1972 Jan 11.

Malone writes to thank Vaughan for a letter wishing him a happy birthday, an event that "was much more widely advertised than [he] expected or desired..." He says that he knows he can't hide how old he is since Vaughan was in his first class in what he likes to call "the black hole of Calcutta," (northwest wing of the Rotunda) now occupied by the "Admissions people." Accompanying this letter is another from Vaughan to Edmund Berkeley, Jr., Curator of Manuscripts for Alderman Library. In the 1981 Dec 1 letter he explains some of the references made in Malone's letter and fondly describes him as a professor.
