Papers in this collection reflect the activities of various members of the Cook family of New Bedford, Mass. Other relations by marriage included in this collection are Caroline Amelia Bailey Seabury (1811-1881), mother of Cornelia Seabury Cook and Caroline's parents, Peleg Bailey (b. 1788), and Sarah Gray Bailey (b. 1783). Papers for Caroline Seabury include correspondence and poems (1852-1853, 1879), written to her daughter, Cornelia. Papers for the Baileys consist of a letter (1833), to Peleg Bailey regarding sales of livestock and notes regarding bequests for the will of Sarah Gray Bailey (ca. 1860), and her sister's death notice (1865). Miscellaneous papers in this collection consist of correspondence, poems, and clippings (1844-1869). The correspondence is a letter (1844), from M. K. Wing, of Sandwich, Mass., to Thomas Cook, father of William, regarding William's stay at Sandwich and a letter (1848), from Grant Thorburn, of New York, N.Y., to an unknown friend. The poems are either handwritten or are clippings from the newspaper (ca. 1850-1869).

An important 18th century radical republican theorist and political writer, Thomas Paine was a leading figure in the American Revolution. Despite his humble beginnings and lack of formal education, his reasoned and persuasive writings not only influenced nascent American republican ideology, but profoundly affected the perception of government in England and France as well. His three most influential works are (1776), (1791-1792), and (1794, 1795, 1807). The Richard Gimbel Collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Gimbel (1898-1970) and that most were written by, to, or about the revolutionary Paine. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand, including Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for , his letter of January 10, 1781, in which he takes leave of his former commanding officer, Nathanael Greene, and his January 6, 1789 letter to Kitty Nicholson Few, in which he writes of his view of matrimony and other personal matters. The collection includes a series of correspondence between Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams, which were originally marked "forgeries," these appear instead simply to be the letters of two men bearing famous names. The collection holds correspondence and documents which are primarily the papers of the Philadelphia antiquarian collector John A. McAllister, but it includes some additional material relating to his family and their optical business. As McAllister was an active collector of autograph letters, there are items from many of the important names in nineteenth-century politics, culture, religion, and the military, including members of the Peale family and other Philadelphians. A large component of the collection relates to McAllister's acquisition methods, so there are letters from private and institutional collectors of Americana in other parts of the country as well as with working historians such as Benson J. Lossing. Much of the collection focuses on the American Civil War (1861-1865); the single literary item is a manuscript by Edgar Allan Poe.

Scrapbook of newspaper clippings of letters to the editor and articles written by Thorburn, some suggesting colonization of African-Americans, for the New York Evening Express; includes draft of letter dated 1853 to "Mr. Printer" stating that between 1847 and 1849 he accompanied a missionary from the Methodist Conference on a trip through Virginia and South Carolina to preach to slaves on plantations.

Many of the articles deal with his memories of Thomas Paine; others contain general reminiscences of New York in Thorburn's youth. The volume has a title page referring to its first article, Notes on Virginia by Laurie Todd: or, Slavery not as bad as some people suppose.
