Residents of New Bedford, Mass., in particular, William Cook (1833-1876), who was employed by the firm of Cook & Snow, dry goods dealers, in 1856, and by 1859 had become a partner. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Cook had enlisted in the local guard unit and was commissioned into the Massachusetts militia in June of 1863. Cook was a 1st lieutenant in Company B of the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment and was stationed at Fort Baker, Washington, D.C., until he was discharged in 1864.
