Letters and accounts of Dr. Samuel Powell Byrd of Gloucester County, Virginia, and his son, Richard C. Byrd, and step-son, William L. Fauntleroy. Letters include one from William to his step-father, n.d., discussing his plans to study medicine; and two from Thomas Marshall to son John, 1823 and 1824, giving fatherly advice (John later married the daughter of Richard C. Byrd). Accounts include those with Jesse Cole, Nicholas, Vest & Co., B.E. Bucktrout, W.W. Vest & Co., and T.B. Taliaferro, for medical supplies, household goods, clothing, and furniture. Also in the collection are letters and papers regarding S.P. Byrd's financial notes held by Roscow Cole and Lemuel Bowden, and bonds co-signed for money owed to William Fauntleroy and J.A. Deneufville.

Manuscripts; research notes; correspondence; reprints; published patents. The manuscripts, research notes, and the majority of the correspondence cover such topics as wave mechanisms, classical electromagnetic theory, a mechanical system of theoretical physics, rotational ethers, McCullagh ethers, and relativistic classical ethers. The collection reflects little of the scientific and technological activity for which Hartley is known. Rather, it deals almost exclusively with Hartley's theoretical research from the later 1920s until his death. The various attempts to defend a classical mechanistic view of physical phenomena and to discard relativity theory and quantum mechanics are well documented, as is his often frustrating effort to find a audience in the official community of physicists and philosophers of science. Correspondents include: David Bohm, Louis de Broglie, Charles W. Churchman, Lloyd Espenschied, Samuel A. Goudsmit, Herbert E. Ives, Henry Margeneau, Thomas Marshall, Marvin G. Moore, Harry Nyquist, John T. Tate, and Carl Wiley.
