Letters and accounts of Dr. Samuel Powell Byrd of Gloucester County, Virginia, and his son, Richard C. Byrd, and step-son, William L. Fauntleroy. Letters include one from William to his step-father, n.d., discussing his plans to study medicine; and two from Thomas Marshall to son John, 1823 and 1824, giving fatherly advice (John later married the daughter of Richard C. Byrd). Accounts include those with Jesse Cole, Nicholas, Vest & Co., B.E. Bucktrout, W.W. Vest & Co., and T.B. Taliaferro, for medical supplies, household goods, clothing, and furniture. Also in the collection are letters and papers regarding S.P. Byrd's financial notes held by Roscow Cole and Lemuel Bowden, and bonds co-signed for money owed to William Fauntleroy and J.A. Deneufville.

Dr. Samuel Powell Byrd was the son of William Byrd, IV and Susan Lewis. Samuel P. Byrd was married to Catherine Corbin who died in 1838. He then married Mary Lewis Brooke.
