The John Sartain papers include: letterpress books, 1869-1871, 1875-1876, concerning his Philadelphia and London exhibitions work and other business; outgoing letters, 1850-1897, mostly during trips to Europe on business and pleasure; letters from his son Samuel, an engraver, while in London on business for John, 1850; letters from another son William, a painter, 1862-1888, many written while living in Paris from 1872 to 1875; random portions of his professional and personal correspondence, 1845-1897. Additional papers are:manuscript and expense book for "Sartain's Union Magazine," 1849-1852; the manuscript Sartain's autobiography "Reminiscences of a Very Old Man"; Artist Fund Society papers, 1838-1846; Graphic Association of Philadelphia minutes, 1849-1855; Philadelphia Union of Associationists minutes, 1847-1854; National Art Association record book, 1858-1859; artist Rembrant Peale's unpublished "Notes of the Painting Room." Also represented are John Swaine, Sartain's father-in-law and the English engraver with whom Sartain apprenticed with in London, John Barah Swaine, English artist, and three of Sartain's children: Emily Sartain, noted woman artist, Samuel Sartain, engraver, and William Sartain, painter. These papers include: Samuel Sartain's outgoing family correspondence, engravings, and other papers; personal letters to and by Emily Sartain; William Sartain's outgoing family correspondence and sketchbook, genealogical data, and miscellaneous materials. The Swaine family papers include drawings by John Swaine and John Barak Swaine, a letterpress book of John Barak Swaine's letters to his father, 1834-1837, and genealogical data on the Swaine and allied families. The collection also includes 122 drawings by Thomas Birch and seven steel plates, a set of engraving tools, and oil paintings by Swaine.

Memorandum book, 1785-1825 (1 reel, film from the Pennsylvania Hospital); account book of the estate of Deborah Morris, 1793-1817 (1 vol., ca 68 p.), contains a copy of her will, inventory, records of income and disbursements by the executors; day book, 1796-1816 (1 vol., 32 p.), containing notes of payments and sales, of wills written, mortgages arranged, rentals agreed to, notes signed, etc.. There is also a receipt book, 1803-1830 (1 vol., ca. 308 p., see B C632), containing signed receipts for purchase of hickory wood, ham, stores, oil, varnish, liquors, gravestones, "cyder," and for payment of taxes, wages, painting the house, etc.; vendors include Zaccheus Collins, John Syng Dorsey, Peter S. Du Ponceau, Christian Febiger, Rebecca Jones, and Ann Moore. In this volume, as well, are signatures and engravings (some by Samuel Sartain) of John Barry, Tench Coxe, Charles Chauncey, Isaac T. Hopper, and Zachariah Poulson (presented by Arthur Bloch, 1953); and bank books, 1788-1798 (2 vols., ca. 110 pp.), being a record of checks, bills of exchange, notes, gold, silver, and currency sent to Bank (of North America).

A group of seven etchings created by prominent Philadelphia engravers, John and Samuel Sartain, and by Edward S. Best. The techniques employed include a mix of 19th century techniques including mezzotint, aquatint, and stippling. The etchings recreate the works of several prominent 18th-19th cent. Philadelphia painters, Benjamin West and Christian Schussele.

The microfilm of selections from the Seymour Adelman collection consists of materials relating to the Sartain family and to Thomas and Susan Eakins. The Sartain materials include letters (1845-1945) to Emily Sartain, Harriet Sartain, John Sartain, Samuel Sartain, and William Sartain. Correspondents include artists William Trost Richards, James Hamilton, Rusell Smith, and Xanthus Smith. Eakins material includes letters (1931-1958) to Adelman from Charles Bregler, including a few responses from Adelman; Susan Eakins correspondence (1931-1938), mostly from Eakins to Adelman regarding paintings, commissions, exhibitions, articles, and personal matters; and postcards to Susan Eakins and Thomas Eakins (1890-1933) including one from Walter Pach to Susan Eakins. One letter (1868) from Thomas Eakins to Benjamin Eakins; and two letters to Thomas Eakins are also included. Also found are Thomas Eakins’ three account/ledger sheets (1870-1895); miscellaneous Eakins family materials; and photographs by Thomas Eakins, Susan Eakins, and others, primarily formal and informal portraits of Thomas and Susan Eakins, their families, and pets.
