Contains the following type of materials: correspondence / letters. Contains information pertaining to the following war and time period: Civil War. Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: Department of the Ohio; Department of the Platte; Army of the Ohio. General description of the collection: The John W. Barriger papers include three copybooks of letters sent by Barriger while on duty as commissary during and after the Civil War; at the headquarters Department of the Ohio, mostly stationed at Knoxville (January 28, 1864-January 21, 1865); at Louisville, Kentucky (January 1-July 20, 1866 and November 28, 1866 to February 1, 1867); and at the headquarters, Department of the Platte (February 18-May 28, 1867). During the 1864 operations, he remained at permanent department headquarters, but the following year he apparently accompanied the Army of the Ohio in the field. No letters are available for his service in North Carolina other than a summary statement of January 1, 1866, that he had performed such duty. Also missing, is the volume of his correspondence for the period July 21 - November 27, 1866. The gap in February, 1867, however, results not from a comparable lack, but from the fact that he wrote no letters while transferring from Louisville to Omaha. Most of his wartime corespondence concerns supply operations, but an occasional letter refers to military operations. Among the prominent Union generals to whom he wrote are : Stephen G. Burbridge, Jefferson C. Davis, Amos B. Eaton, Theophilus T. Garrard, Eli P. Long, Montgomery C. Meigs, Edward E. Potter, John M. Schofield, Philip H. Sheridan, Joseph P. Taylor, John W. Turner, and William D. Whipple.

General description of the collection: The Amos B. Eaton papers contains a diary and a letter. Eaton kept a diary from 26 January 1830 to 20 April 1830 during a trip from New York through the South and back to New York to deliver new Lieutenants and soldiers to their posts. In the diary, he makes observatons on flora, fauna, and geology, as well as noting his activities and thoughts. The letter was written to his wife, Elizabeth Eaton, on 5 June 1841 from Eaton's post at Pilatha, Florida, describing his health and duties.

His early letters reflect the daily life of cadets at West Point in the mid-1820s, and his later letters to his wife provide family news, as well as information about the Army and contemporary politics.

Eaton transmits a copy of his 1832 geological survey map of the state to Governor William L. Marcy. The map is a part of the Institute's geological text book which was sent to Marcy earlier. The map is in color and details the various types of rock which make up the state. The map, which measures 12" x 16" also includes northern Pennsylvania.

This group of fifteen letters is made up largely of correspondence between Amos Beebe Eaton (1806-1877) and his wife and son, Elizabeth Selden Eaton and Daniel Cady Eaton (1834-1895). Amos Beebe Eaton is in Northern California during this time, and his son Daniel is a student at Yale collecting botanical samples. The letters document the family's sentiments about their separation but also describe a student's life in New Haven, CT, and a soldier's life in Northern California during the mid-nineteenth century. There is also one letter to Daniel Cady Eaton (1834-1895) from an uncle of the same name, a brother of Amos Beebe Eaton.
