This collection contains letters that United States Army lieutenant (and later general) Amos Beebe Eaton wrote while training at the United States Military Academy and traveling in New York, Connecticut, Ohio, and Michigan. His early letters reflect the daily life of cadets at West Point in the mid-1820s, and his later letters to his wife provide family news, as well as information about the Army and contemporary politics.

Amos Beebe Eaton (1806-1877) graduated from the US Military Academy in 1826, took part in the Seminole War in Florida and was with General Taylor's army of occupation in the Mexican War. He was in Benicia and San Francisco, CA, between 1853-55. During the Civil War he was purchasing commissary in New York City (1861-64) and commisary-general of subsistence in Washington, D.C. Amos Beebe Eaton was born in Catskill, New York, on May 12, 1806, the son of botanist Amos Eaton (1776-1842) and Sally Cady (1785-1816). He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1826, and served as a lieutenant during the Second Seminole War.
