Physicist and educator (geophysics, geodesy). On the faculty of Ohio State University in physics and mechanics, 1873-1884; and superintendent, United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1889-1894.
At the time of this letter, Mendenhall was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Professor pf Physics (1873-78, 1881-84) and Trustee (1919-1924), The Ohio State University. Professor Mendenhall was the first of the eight original faculty members chosen in 1873. He was also the recipient, in 1878, of the University's first honorary degree. Mendehall Laboratory is named in his honour.

Haworth; his dissertation on low voltage electron diffraction; his employment as an x-ray specialist responsible for industrial radiography and x-ray and electron diffraction at General Motors Research Laboratories under Charles F. Kettering, and his work during the Second World War there; his work in ultrasonic inspection devices and development of a DC fluorescent aircraft-interior lighting system for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; his brief employment with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); his 18-year employment with Western Precipitation Corporation as director of research, developing precipitators, filters, cyclonic collectors, and scrubbers; his work at National Engineering Science Company and JPL on nuclear missiles and the Mariner spacecraft; and his current work as a consultant. Respondents were asked to discuss their choice of physics as a profession and the course of their careers, their satisfactions and disappointments, the changes they saw in working and teaching conditions in the field, and relations within the community and with the society at large.

The collection concerns Mendenhall's activities and interests in physics, seismology, geodesy, metrology standards, Shakespeare, his theory of composition curves, and numerous professional and scholarly societies such as the American Geographical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Physical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, the Philosophical Society of Washington, and the Franklin Institute. The collection consists mostly of correspondence (1871-1924). The general correspondence of Thomas C. Mendenhall (1892-1896) is concerned with Mendenhall's service with the Coast and Geodetic Survey, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Ohio State University, detailing especially his work on the adoption of electrical and metrical standards and the history and growth of Ohio State University. Also included is family correspondence which includes that of his son, Charles E. Mendenhall (1907-1935) consisting mostly of letters written to him by friends and colleagues upon the death of his father, as well as some material to T.C. Mendenhall's estate. Autobiographical materials include a holographic manuscript, "Autobiographical Notes," which span the Mendenhall family history and his life through 1894; also included are annual diaries (1891-1924). The balance of the collection consists of notes, manuscripts, clippings souvenirs and miscellaneous materials concerning Mendenhall's scientific interests and such non-scientific concerns as Ohio (the state), Japan, and Shakespeare. An addition included materials relating to Mendenhall's time spent in Japan, teaching physics. This includes photographs of friends and physicists in Japan, scenery including the Mendenhall Glacier, instruments, as well as a diary from 1851-1853 with drawings, postcards, and a photo album from Japan.
