Letters of Lord and Lady Martin, 1885-1904, to George A.P.H. Duncan.
Duncan was a British peer who, after marrying an American, lived and worked in Boston; he maintained a vigorous correspondence with English friends and relations. Letters from Theodore Martin, the writer, are full of affection for his wife and of concern over her health. He writes of international news and events, and voices his dismay over the rise of socialism in England, the "surplus population," and the election of radicals to municipal office. Letters from Lady Martin, the former actress, illustrate her interest in Shakespearian drama; she comments freely on the popular literature of the day, on Robert Browning and Lord Tennyson who were personal friends, and thanks Duncan for the many books he has sent her, commenting on each one.
