The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824. The papers of Madame du Pont consist for the most part of family correspondence.

This collection of the papers of E. I. du Pont was amassed by his descendant, Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954). The main body of E. I. du Pont's papers descended through Henry Algernon du Pont to Henry Francis du Pont and now forms part of the Hagley Museum & Library's Winterthur Manuscripts.

Series A, correspondence of Victor du Pont, consists primarily of letters to his family. Those to his brother, Eleuthère Irénée, are the most numerous. The correspondence also describes the emergence of Victor du Pont & Co. and its financial problems. Series B includes Victor du Pont's writings, student notebooks, and business papers of Victor and Charles I. du Pont, cloth manufacturers. Included are contracts and apprenticeship papers. Also included is a letterbook that Victor du Pont kept while in Paris (1801) on behalf of Du Pont de Nemours, Père & Fils Cie. Correspondence with Bertram Cruger and Moses L. Moses concern land investments in Kentucky and New York.

Title: The Winterthur Manuscripts 1588-1955.

The Henry Francis du Pont collection of Winterthur Manuscripts contains the personal papers of those portions of the du Pont family that descended to Colonel Henry Algernon du Pont and his son, Henry Francis du Pont of Winterthur. Between 1949 and 1957 the bulk of this collection was deposited at the Longwood Library, where it joined a similar collection of family papers assembled by Pierre S. du Pont. The papers of Henry Francis du Pont remain at Winterthur.

Wilmington and Kennett Turnpike Company. Records, 1811-1921.

Title: Records, 1811-1921.

The records of the Wilmington & Kennett Turnpike Company include: minute books (1859-1920); loose minutes and reports (1839-1919); financial statements 1901-21); stock certificates (1811-1919); dividend records (1869-1919); and toll records (1814-1919, incomplete). There are also agreements covering the transfer of the road to the state and a record of persons whose toll payments were reduced or "commuted" because of frequent travel (1864-70). The correspondence consists of about 370 items (1860-1921), all letters to and from members of the company.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Records, 1800-1905.

Title: Records, 1800-1905.

The nineteenth century records of the Du Pont Company are remarkably complete. They document the founding of the Company in Paris in 180l, its evolution into an American partnership during the early decades of the century, and its first incorporation in 1899. The records document the financial and business negotiations which led up to the founding of the company, the selection of a site for operations, the erection of mills, the intallation of machinery, methods of manufacture, production, and marketing. The records also describe the importation of saltpeter from India and sodium nitrate from Chile and shows how these raw materials were used in the production of black powder. Correspondence with Philadelphia labor agents show that Du Pont was heavily dependent on Irish labor. The collection contains a good deal of information about the Irish workers and describes the paternalistic relationship that evolved between the Du Pont family and the company's labor force.
