One album contains mid to late 19th century portrait photographs, largely studio portraits, in the form of cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and tintypes. Portraits are of unidentified men, women, and children, and a few celebrities including Abraham Lincoln, Tom Thumb and his wife, and actress Emma Waller. These were taken by photographers in Camden, Elizabeth, and Jersey City, N.J.; Long Island City, New York City, and Brooklyn, N.Y.; Washington D.C.; Pennsylvania; and possibly elsewhere. Of note are two portraits of black people, one of a young woman taken by a photograher in Elizabeth, N.J., and another of Samuel Math Francis, American-Sudan Mission, Freetown, Africa. Also of note are an advertisement for John Thompson & Co., a furniture manufacturer on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn; a business card of H.L. Bemis, General Electrician, of Glen Cove, Long Island; an advertisement for actress Emma Waller, ca. 1870s; a pamphlet from The Girls Friendly Society of America, located in New York City, 1893, announcing the death of General Secretary Letitia Townsend of Matinecock, Long Island from typhus at Riverside Hospital, North Brother Island, Queens, N.Y.

Ephemeral items include advertisements, visiting cards, fancy envelopes, invitations, postcards, caricatures and cartoons, printed ribbons, and other items. While almost all of the items are undated, many seem to date from the late 19th century. There are, however, some items that appear to be from earlier in the 19th century and a few from the 20th century. Among the visiting cards is one for General Tom Thumb and his wife, M. Lavinia Magri, and among the ribbons is one mourning the death of Abraham Lincoln. There are also a few items relating to rationing during World War II.

Title: Theodore T. Fogle letters, 1847-1865.

The collection consists of about 200 letters, 173 of which were written by Theodore Fogle, and several miscellaneous items. Theodore Fogle's correspondence with his family describes student life in Marietta, Georgia, and Baltimore, Maryland, life in the Confederate Army, and troop movements, battles, and commanders. These letters and those written by his brother (James), his sister (Mary F. Harrold), and other family and friends, also describe family activities, slavery, Tom Thumb (Charles S.M. Stratton), and Confederate hospitals. The clippings concerns Fogle's death, the poem, valentine, and sketch by a fellow soldier, were collected by Fogle; a carte-de-visite is of Fogle and a copy photo is of Marion J. Cotton Blackshear.

The collection is primarily comprised of photographs, drawings, and correspondence related to Bacon's career with the Ford Motor Company and the Edison Institute (now The Henry Ford). The material is arranged into five series. The Golden Jubilee painting series (2.8 cubic ft. and 1 oversize box) is comprised of pamphlets, notes, lists, correspondence and photographs related to the painting created by Bacon entitled "Celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Invention of the Incandescent Electric Light" (also known as the "Dedication of the Edison Institute of Technology"). The photographs are mainly portraits of many of the invited guests who attended the October 21, 1929 celebration honoring the opening of the Edison Institute and 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison's discovery of incandescent light. Bacon obtained the photographs six years later from 266 individuals ranging from Henry Ford's personal friends to world business and political leaders. The Irving Bacon personal materials series (0.4 cubic ft. and 1 oversize box) primarily reflects Bacon's interest in the theater world and is comprised mainly of photographs and sketches of actors, actresses, and stage sets. The Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum series (1.2 cubic ft. and 1 oversize box) is a large assortment of photographs, notes, and various types of artwork relating to Ford related personalities and buildings that Bacon painted or intended to paint. The Henry Ford related work series contains work Bacon did for Henry Ford. Included are miscellaneous printed materials, photographs, sketches, and maps (photographed). The Dearborn Independent series (1 oversize box) includes sketches, and color drawings created for the Dearborn Independent.

Of interest are her accounts of a performance by Tom Thumb; a visit to the Auburn State prison; Wyoming Seminary at Kingston, Pa.; taking the water cure at Binghamton, N.Y.; stereotyped views of slaves and slavery; a tournament; engagement to Col. Frank Sterett; Sterrett's depression from morphine taken for rheumatic pain; many games of charades; war time inflation; different sounds made by Union and Confederate cavalry; wedding day, honeymoon and return to Virginia; and meditations on answered prayer in her life. Beginning January 24, 1861, she copies from her diaries which relate war news and local events which included sewing and fund-raising for the troops.

Chang and Eng Bunker, the original Siamese twins, married sisters Sarah and Adelaide Yates in 1843 and established homes and families in Wilkes County and later Surry County, N.C. The collection includes correspondence, bills, and receipts, including slave bills of sale, of Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker relating to their North Carolina property, planting interests, family matters, and arrangements for exhibition tours. Also included are an account book, 1833-1839, showing income from public appearances and itinerary; clippings; photographs; articles about the twins by Worth B. Daniels and Jonathan Daniels and related material; and , a 1998 videotape about the twins that was made by Advanced Medical Productions of Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Discovery Channel. The Addition of November 2011 is a ledger with entries presumably penned by Chang and Eng's business manager Charles Harris detailing the business-related and personal expenses of Chang and Eng during exhibition tours of Cuba, Europe, and the United States and for a period after they settled in North Carolina in 1839. Holmes, Louise Chevallier. Reminiscences of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the late 19th century, ca. 1939.

Title: Reminiscences of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the late 19th century, ca. 1939.

Mrs. Holmes begins her reminiscence with her father, Victor Chevallier, sailing from Paris to San Francisco in 1848; her mother later sailed to California from Bordeaux, France. After he arrived, Chevallier purchased the only pharmacy in San Francisco. Louise recalls some of the stories her father told her about early San Francisco, the Gold Rush and vigilante activity. Due to Louise's father's health, the family moved to Los Angeles in 1874. Mrs. Holmes discusses her memories of growing up in Los Angeles and tells stories about some of the eccentric residents of the city. Her father opened a pharmacy across from the Pico House and Louise remembers some of the famous guests she saw at that hotel and at the Grand Central Hotel, including Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thumb. She also gives a general description of the layout of the city and includes details about the cities' doctors, merchants, and photographers as well as the locations of stores and schools.

The diaries of a student and Civil War soldier. Included are 58 handwritten diaries by Benjamin Browne Foster from the years 1847 when he was 15 years old until 1853 when he was a student at Bowdoin College. The diaries are numbered 10 through 77 and a few of them are missing (15, 16, 26, 44, 55, 67-70). Journal no. 18 includes Benjamin's account of his attending a performance by Tom Thumb. Included in the journal is a copy of the pamphlet "Sketch of the life, personal appearance, character and manners of Charles S. Stratton ... known as General Tom Thumb" printed in New York by Van Norden & Amerman in 1847. Included also is a photocopy of a typescript "Reminiscences" (p. 23-61) by Benjamin Browne Foster. In it he describes his service in the Civil War. Included also is a photocopy of a typescript "A diary of the American Renaissance" which contains portions of the diaries by Benjamin Browne Foster. It was published as Down East Diary by Benjamin Browne Foster and edited by Charles H. Foster. Some of the pages of the typescript are missing.

Also shown is P.T. Barnum's star midget performer General Tom Thumb with Lavinia Warren (later Lavinia Magri) on their wedding day, with midgets Commodore McNutt and Minnie Warren as their best man and bridesmaid. Also includes photographs of several members of the Yeomans family. The album is bound in brown morocco with clasps and edges gilt.
