Photographs of buildings, people, and graphics associated with four major Wisconsin fires: the Newhall House hotel fire in Milwaukee in 1883, the Third Ward fire in Milwaukee in 1892, the Reedsburg Central House fire in 1896, and the State Capitol fire in 1904. Included are portraits of James Foley, Milwaukee fire chief from 1883 to 1913; Hermann Straus, captioned "hero of the fire"; and General and Mrs. Tom Thumb who survived the Newhall House blaze.

Charles Stratton (1838-1883), stage name General Tom Thumb, was an American showman noted for his small stature. He was the first major attraction promoted by the circus impresario P.T. Barnum. He was not quite five years old when Barnum hired him for his museum, but Barnum publicized him as General Tom Thumb, an 11-year-old dwarf from England.
