Charles Stratton (1838-1883), stage name General Tom Thumb, was an American showman noted for his small stature. He was the first major attraction promoted by the circus impresario P.T. Barnum. He was not quite five years old when Barnum hired him for his museum, but Barnum publicized him as General Tom Thumb, an 11-year-old dwarf from England. George Washington Morrison Nutt was the son of Major Rodnia Nutt, a gentleman farmer of Manchester, N. H. He was a precocious and talented midget who was engaged by Phineas T. Barnum to perform at the American Museum in 1862. It was Barnum who gave him the sobriquet "Commodore" Nutt. He was the coachman for Tom Thumb. Nutt died, a bachelor, in 1881 at the age of 37.
