Saying that in the first scene of the history of Alcindor he was reminded of Lessing's Minna v[on] B[arnhelm], complaining of rheumatic toothache, describing the illness and death of his wife, thanking him for volume two of his Gesammelte Schriften and for [Weber's] Der Freÿschütz, commenting on both [and on Der Freischütz at length], thanking him for the Sagen, saying he was up until 2:00 A.M. reading the "Verschwundenen," responding at length to Kind's request for a critique in the Leipziger literarische Zeitung, adding that his own strength lies in knowing the history of both the visual and musical arts, and that his talent lies in presenting it even to the unlearned (only Goethe had both, but only regarding the visual arts), mentioning Raupach's Erdennacht, Traum, ein Märchen [i.e. Das Märchen im Traum], Calderón's Offentliche Geheimnis, Shakespeare's Kaufmann v[on] Venedig, Houwald, Schlegel, Heeren, v. Müller, etc., etc.

Title: Lucille Lortel papers

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

The holograph volume contains English prose translations of extracts from German playwrights and poets of the later eighteenth century, including Christian Furchtegott Gellert, Friedrich von Hagedorn, Ewald Christian von Kleist, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Christian Felix Weisse, and Christoph Martin Wieland. The choice of texts was inspired by translator Michel Huber and contains critical footnotes by the anonymous translator. Includes one poem by Ewald Kleist transcribed in French from Jean Francois Marmontel's Poetique Francaise (Paris, 1763), and two unattributed plays, an eighty-page comedy (The Count of Olsbach) and a sixty-page untitled Gothic melodrama.
