Gellert, Christian Fürchtegott, 1715-1769. Translations into English of German poems and plays, ca. 1800.

Translations into English of German poems and plays, ca. 1800.

The holograph volume contains English prose translations of extracts from German playwrights and poets of the later eighteenth century, including Christian Furchtegott Gellert, Friedrich von Hagedorn, Ewald Christian von Kleist, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Christian Felix Weisse, and Christoph Martin Wieland. The choice of texts was inspired by translator Michel Huber and contains critical footnotes by the anonymous translator. Includes one poem by Ewald Kleist transcribed in French from Jean Francois Marmontel's Poetique Francaise (Paris, 1763), and two unattributed plays, an eighty-page comedy (The Count of Olsbach) and a sixty-page untitled Gothic melodrama.
