Hunter, 1855 October 19, regarding Hunter's presidential ambitions; a letter to Lt. [N.H.?] Van Zandt, 1863 November 29, on Van Zandt's present to Mrs. Seddon, his naval career, sickness and death in Seddon's family, and commenting briefly on the loss of several Confederate ships; a letter to his sister Sally Bruce, 1864 May 18, comprehensively discussing the war in Virginia and Georgia including the strength of Union forces and needs of the South, and mentioning Colonel Mosby and Generals Grant, Lee, Beauregard, Butler, and Johnston, and the saving of Richmond by "God's grace and the timidity of our enemies"; and a letter to his sister Sally Bruce, 1867 December 6, discussing the trial of Jefferson Davis. George Harrison; a letter from Sally Bruce Seddon to Charles Bruce, 1865 Feb.14, on the state of the war, conditions in Richmond, her husband's resignation and replacement as Secretary of War by Gen. Breckenridge; a letter from William C. Rives to Jefferson Davis, 1865 Jan. 12; a letter from A.T. Caperton to Jefferson Davis, 1864 Nov.15, concerning Generals Lee and Breckinridge and army enlistments; a letter from Robert L. The collection contains scrapbooks covering Senator Bruce's career in the U.S. Senate, including correspondence, clippings, addresses, debates, recollections, amendments proposed by him, and a voting record. The collection also contains notebooks on Thomas Jefferson, and notes and drafts for "Thomas Jefferson Self-Revealed," and the draft of an article "Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic preceptor." The collection also contains a Staunton Hill deed book, 1801-1902, with copies of all deeds, pertaining to Staunton Hill; a ledger, 1802-1807, of James Bruce, a letterbook, 1828-1832 of James Bruce, a journal, 1844-1851, of James Coles. Bruce, and a report by Thomas H. Sherrard on Stuanton Hill plantation. There are also miscellaneous legal documents, clippings and Bruce family accounts.

Collection includes correspondence, 1841-1894 (304 items), of Charles Bruce concerning Staunton Hill plantation in Charlotte County, Va., the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harvard University, abolitionism, the 1848 French Revolution, his service in the Virginia Senate and Virginia politics, the Confederate States Army of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and Afro-Americans' participation in politics; accounts, 1848-1877, for the construction of the house at Staunton Hill in Charlotte County, with the Confederate States Quartermasters Department, and as treasurer of Charlotte County, Va.; bonds, 1862-1864; and deeds, slave lists, wills, estate inventories, and other legal records pertaining to Bruce's estate and to Staunton Hill. Also contains correspondence, 1840-1907 (721 items), of Sarah Alexander (Seddon) Bruce about family life, travel in England, France, Germany and Italy, the Vulcan Iron Works in Richmond, Va., and the care and preservation of books. Also present in the collection are correspondence, 1871-1926, and accounts, 1871-1896, of Charles Morelle Bruce relating to cattle raising; his report book, 1872-1873, while a student at the University of Berlin, Germany; and other materials, 1919-1921, kept as Assistant Commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office. The collection also includes the order book, 1828, of the Halifax County, Va., Court, kept by James Bruce (1763-1837).
