Collection includes correspondence, 1841-1894 (304 items), of Charles Bruce concerning Staunton Hill plantation in Charlotte County, Va., the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harvard University, abolitionism, the 1848 French Revolution, his service in the Virginia Senate and Virginia politics, the Confederate States Army of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and Afro-Americans' participation in politics; accounts, 1848-1877, for the construction of the house at Staunton Hill in Charlotte County, with the Confederate States Quartermasters Department, and as treasurer of Charlotte County, Va.; bonds, 1862-1864; and deeds, slave lists, wills, estate inventories, and other legal records pertaining to Bruce's estate and to Staunton Hill. Also contains correspondence, 1840-1907 (721 items), of Sarah Alexander (Seddon) Bruce about family life, travel in England, France, Germany and Italy, the Vulcan Iron Works in Richmond, Va., and the care and preservation of books. Also present in the collection are correspondence, 1871-1926, and accounts, 1871-1896, of Charles Morelle Bruce relating to cattle raising; his report book, 1872-1873, while a student at the University of Berlin, Germany; and other materials, 1919-1921, kept as Assistant Commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office. The collection also includes the order book, 1828, of the Halifax County, Va., Court, kept by James Bruce (1763-1837).
