Title: Papers, 1790-1843.

Papers, 1790-1824, containing inventories, letter books, account books, and miscellaneous notes. One volume contains inventories of his engravings and his personal and household possessions, as packed in cases for shipment across the Atlantic in 1803, 1808, and 1813. The same volume contains results of his experiments with colors and paints, and formulas for making paints and varnishes, as well as reciptes for medicines and household cleaning substances. Another volume contains three small account books, two dealing with subscriptions for engravings made from his paintings, the third with proceeds and expenses of the exhibition in 1824 of his painting, the Resignation of General Washington, in various cities in the northeastern United States. A third volume contains accounts, letters and memoranda relating to the management of his lands in the Mount Morris tract of Genesee County (N.Y.). Many of the letters are written to James Wadsworth and Samuel M. Hopkins, apparently his agents there, and include instructions on the rental and management of the land; one letter contains an inventory of a shipment of fruit trees and ornamental trees for planting there, enumerating the different varieties. The volume also includes a narrative, dated 1805, of a subscription taken up to improve the road to Dr. Samuel Willard's house at Stafford Springs (Conn.), and accounts of expenditure on the work done. Some related papers are laid in to this volume. There are also two letter books, 1796-1802, and 1810-1817. The earlier volume deals mostly with his work as commissioner charged with settling the 7th article, relating to American claims, of the Jay treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain, although some letters include general discussions of politics and of his business affairs. Correspondents include Oliver Wolcott, John Jay, Rufus King, and his brother Jonathan Trumbull. The second volume includes 16 letters to Rufus King. Most of the letters in the later volume were written during 1811-1813, when Trumbull was in England. Many of them give his views on the War of 1812, particularly the impressment issue, including one to the Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, another to Sir Robert Liston, and one which was published in the Morning Post. Other letters deal with business and personal affairs, including his detention in Britain as an enemy alien, and the career in the British Army of his natural son, John Trumbull Ray. There are also letters discussing American politics, and a strong attack on DeWitt Clinton. A list of correspondents accompanies the volume.

Ebenezer Stevens Papers, 1776-1822

Title: Ebenezer Stevens Papers 1776-1822

Ebenezer Stevens (1751-1823) served as a soldier and officer in the Continental Army and the New York State Artillery Corps during the Revolutionary War. Post-war, Stevens was an agent for the United States War Department as well as a successful merchant in New York City. This collection documents his activities as a merchant both indepentently and for the militia. Additionally, it documents Stevens' role as a commanding officer, specifically during the fortification of New York City in the early 1800s.

Papers, 1776-1822, consisting of correspondence, bills of lading, accounts, miltary papers, and other miscellaneous papers. They deal with Stevens's command of a corps of artillery in the Northern Department of the Continental Army during the Revolution; his accounts with the government; his shipping trade during the 1790s, particularly with the West Indies; troubles with France during the late 1790s and their effect on trade; his work as agent for the fortification of New York in 1800; his duties as military agent in 1801-1802; his command of the 1st Regiment of Artillery, New York State Militia, during the 1790s; the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia during the 1790s: and trade in lumber and staves. There are also family papers, such as school bills and school reports for his children, and letters from other members of the Stevens family, including a number written from Europe in the 1820s by Byam K. Stevens. Ebenezer Stevens's correspondents include Samuel Hodgdon, James McHenry, Andrew Hodge, Robert Liston, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Horatio Gates, John Lamb, Alexander Hodgdon, Philip Schuyler, George A. Stevens, Horatio Gates Stevens, and members of his wife's family, the Ledyards. A large quantity of the papers consist of correspondence, regimental orders, company returns, and other material relating to the New York State Artillery Corps, 1802-1808, and 1814-15.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of primarily lighthearted anecdotes, bawdy stories, and original verses, as well as copies of letters to acquaintances on primarily political subjects, including many references to the American Revolution. The volume contains a list of Vernon's quotations for different occasions, including to a man lately married and to a person in affliction; anecdotes titled On the means by which a man acquired a large fortune and Reasons why compound fractures should be treated as much as possible; and a poem titled On the death of my dear wife. Many of the other anecdotes concern women's appearance and behavior. Among the copies of his own letters which Vernon has entered in the book are letters to Sir William, Viscount Howe and Colonel D'Tournon concerning the American Revolution; Robert Jocelyn, 1st earl of Roden containing a long account of the culture and habits of American Indians; Sir Robert Liston reporting on the government of India; and George Augustus Eliott, 1st baron Heathfield concerning the attacks made on Gibraltar during the siege of 1779-1782.
